Tonights episode of the Simpsons answered the age old question “Where IS the Springfield that they live in?”.
In tonights episode Homer gets a satellite dish. After installstion they show the “radio waves” leave the dish on his house, then they pan up to a picture of earth and you can clearly see that the waves were in fact originating in Illinois. In fact they were coming from almost EXACTLY Springfield Illiniois.
Wonder is this was intentional or not?

But in the “Behind the Laughter” episode, they said flat-out it was northern Kentucky. So that makes it how many states that Springfield is definitely in?
No, they said the Simpsons were a “northern Kentucky family.” And when reran, they said they were a “southern Missouri family.” The episode treated the Simpsons as actors on a show based on their life that everyone they know just happens to co-star in.
What state is the Learn to Fart State, anyway?
Springfield is nowhere. It doesn’t exist. There are far too many changes in geography (remember West Springfield, which is three times the size of Texas?) for them to be able to even come close to pretending it’s based off of a real place.
Yup i seem to remember Illinios being crossed out as one of the states the Simpsons were not allowed to go to anymore. Towards the end of the episode, Lisa had a big map of states they could’nt go to and i think she marked off texas too. Don’t remember which episode it was though.
Navy episode states that they are on the ocean. Also, Springfield was invovled in the Revolutionary war (“Fort Sensible”). That is why I thought it was in Massachusetts. For every good answer there is contradictory evidence. If you search, there was a thread on this, that I think I started. Not sure if it was lost in the great SDMB crash or not.

And Springfield is the capital of Illinois, so how can you travel from Springfield to another city called Capital City that is the capital of the state, if you know what I mean?
Like interface said, Springfield IS nowhere. The writers purposefully put it in different locations to confuse the hell out of fans. And they’ve succeeded.

Crimeney! Would you people get over it. THERE. IS. NO. SPRINGFIELD. It is a generic Anytown, Anystate, USA. Besides, the geography is inconsistent, and, AFAIK, there is no Shelbyville nearby, much less next door to Springfiled, Illinois. It’s all part of the Simpsons in-jokes. But the writers have done a successful job of it, seeing as we’re how many seasons on and people still debate this topic.
