It's Earth Day! Who cares?!?!

Not me!

My company has reusable mugs for us and is getting rid of the compostable paper ones in the breakrooms. I already had a mug at my desk but this one looks a bit bigger so I’ll take it.

Today they gave away sunflower seeds in the lobby (the planting kind, not the roasted salted ones) so we can marvel at the wonders of nature of the next month or two. They planted a tree on the corporate grounds.

Yay.

This “holiday” is a complete non-event for my family and me. We’re not planting anything, painting anything green, or otherwise changing our lives. I generally consider myself a political moderate but this seems so far to the left that it’s nearly over the international date line.

I’m sure down the road in Boulder they’re celebrating with a 24-hour Gaian, ley-line induced, tantric-flavored orgasm but here, 10 miles down the road, I don’t give a flip.

Do you have any use for this day?

I’m not actually doing anything for Earth Day, but c’mon, man. Why be actively hostile? I’m a fan of the Earth.

Joe

Moving thread from IMHO to The Organic Biodegradable Compost Pit.

I don’t consider today a “holiday” but rather a reminder that we should try to do things that are good for the environment. So to answer your question, I care. I like Earth Day - it’s nice.

So after reading your post - you don’t like earth day why? Because it raises awareness for the health of our planet?

I think the Earth is expecting a bunch of presents. I know she was a wreck for a few weeks last year when I totally forgot about it.

Holy Crap! It’s free scoop at Ben and Jerry’s Day and I’m stuck at school?!?! Boooo!!

ETA: Phew! Free scoop day isn’t until April 29th. I still have time!
When did they switch it off of Earth Day?

No! Because it’s a leftist conspiracy to, ummm, take care of the Earth! Damn communists!

That’s pretty much it. It’s not a holiday (though I wouldn’t mind having today off, it’s absolutely beautiful outside) but a friendly reminder to at least think about the environment in your life.

It’s an opportunity to say “It’s Earth Day, I’m going to stop using paper plates when I have a BBQ.” Make a (small but) positive change.

I agree with most everyone else. Not a huge deal, but I like to think about what I can do to make positive changes in my lifestyle to help the environment.

I know people though that actually ACTIVELY try to not recycle, buy organic etc. because "they don’t want those damn hippies to tell them what to do.

Screw the Earth. What’s it ever done for me?

Do you have any use for this day?

Well, I was planning to recycle my used engine oil by pouring it into the night depository at the public library.

That’ll make up for the twenty trees I’ve already planted this spring. I feel guilty because as Ronald Reagan told us, trees pollute.

I am doing nothing special for Earth Day, though I have in the past. I just try to do my best every day to be green.

I spent the 20th anniversary of Earth Day on the Clearwater and that was great and special and I have done stream clean ups or environmental events.

I just don’t get the hostility. It is no more or less fake than most of our minor holidays. At least it is not a Hallmark Holiday.

Jim

Damn straight. We probably need another dozen Earth Days just to make up for the amount of garbage generated from the Hallmark Holidays.

Yeah…I’m looking in your direction Valentine’s Day.

On another message board I visit, someone was saying her friends replaced all their old lightbulbs with CFLs, but they were extremely adamant that it was to save money and NOT because they were trying to do anything good for the environment.

I don’t care why they do it, as long as they do it.

The strange thing is being Green is associated with being liberal, but much of it meshes well with being fiscal conservative or loving and caring for the planet that God provided if you are religious.

Being Green is common sense.
We greatly increase our safety and well being as a nation if we stop importing oil.
Where do you think Osama Bin Laden’s money came from?
Saving energy save you money in the long run.
If everyone saves energy, we won’t need to build new power plants. We can then cycle out the older ones that pollute more with greater ease.
Why not recycle paper?
Recycling cans and glass and cardboard are good for the economy.
Less pollution in the water and air should mean less illness to fight which should mean a lower overall cost of health care and more productivity in the workplace. The benefit of higher quality of life is a nice bonus too.

I’ll be kind and stop now.

Jim

What Exit?, I totally agree with you and so does my dad, Mr. Super-Conservative (retired CIA & DOD, lifelong Republican who still things Bush is doing a pretty good job). He’s always gardened organically, recycled, re-used everything he possibly can, driven economical cars, and he was one of the first people I know to adopt low-flow showerheads and CFLs.

He hates hippies, though :).

I don’t like Earth so that’s my reason why I don’t do anything for Earth day.

I dislike earth day. It always seem to put taking care of the planet ahead of taking care of the people. And it gives the green twits a nice loud stage to whine from.

I am all for being enviromentally friendly, and I always try lower the negative impact I have on the world around me. It is the scantamonious father-knows-best attitude I have an issue with. The feeling that nothing can be done because it will impact the enviroment, and none of the motherfucking greenies are working to solve the underlying issue, they’re just trying to keep the enviroment the way it is. Earth day seems to celebrate something that comes across as worse than NIMBYism, not only not in my backyard, but not in yours, either.

I love the idea of public transportation, wind power, and other such green initiatives. I get pissed off when the rail line doesn’t get built because it needs to budget yet another impact study, or the turbines can’t go there, the birds will hit them. It’s the same assholes who bitch about the cost of meat one day, and all the waste from animal farms the next. If you want to regulate cattle waste, fine, I can see your point; just don’t bitch to me about how expensive a pound of hamburger is.

Quit fucking bitching about it. Build something, perferably, something built well, and using sustainable methods and meterials. But stop blocking the infrastructure to do things you keep harping on me to do.

(these are the same motherfuckers who I hear whining about the disappearance of small town America, and then are trying to keep those small towns from attracting new companies, who might, ya know, provide some jobs.)

(and comb your hair, shithead. A shower wouldn’t hurt either)

I live green because I choose to limit my carbon footprint on this planet. I have lot’s of friends who are hippies, a few of them attorneys and professors - we all live and work in a world where we can have an impact on it. If you are breathing you are having an impact on this world. Hell even when your not breathing you are having an impact.
