I’m sure yesterday was a slow news day, but NBC’s Nightly News lead off with their “top story” that it has been one year since the SE Asia tsunami. Of a half-hour report (of which only 20 minutes is actualy "news), they devoted the first six minutes to recapitulating what happened last year.
I know it is tragic, but is it news, that it happened a year ago? I suppose every year for a century they will continue this, the anniverseries of Katrina, as they have done for 64 years about Pearl Harbor.
Ah, for the days when TV and radio actually reported news stories.
On the other hand, a couple of people I was with for Christmas were surprised at how little coverage there was of the fact that it was the one year anniversary of the tsunami. So, you know, different strokes for different folks…
Think of it as a reminder that the impact of the tsunami is far from over. They still need aid and supply lines and such, but after so long, people tend to forget.
Besides, it killed more people than 9/11, from what I recall of the numbers, and we remember THAT a lot, so why not?
Approximately one hundred times more. Where I’m sitting at the moment (Koh Phi Phi) lost nearly as many as 9/11, and that from a population of about 10,000.
