It's going to be -49C/-56F with the windchill tomorrow.

That one’s easy for us ex-Minnesotans: it’s because the cold air can’t hold any water, so the humidity is at roughly zero. You’ve been breathing very, very dry air for a while, which will make you thirsty.

That makes sense. Thanks!

For me it’s more when I get inside to the heat that I need to pee again. Like, going outside into the cold doesn’t make me need to pee, but when I go inside and warm up again I gotta go right now!

I worked for Sears for a couple of years, and we sold a ton of leafblowers for Christmas presents. We usually get champagne powder snow here, though.

We had a massive cold snap in California last week. When I took the dogs out for a walk right before bed I worse my very warm winter jacket… and shorts.

Ha! Last week I saw a guy on campus, wearing shorts and a hoodie. It was -10C. Granted, he did look a little stressed.

Right now it’s a dazzling sunny -12C perfect winter day.

The nice thing about the cold is it makes the 9pm curling draw feel nice and warm.

-56…fuck a bunch of that. Like, fuck it. A bunch. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced anything colder than -10.

I really think temperatures that cold would be enough to prompt me to move from my home.

I never really realized how freaking cold actual populated parts of Canada got until I started watching Holmes on Homes. The amount of insulation used, and insulation and condensation-related problems are something I don’t believe anyone thinks about here.

Actually, I have the impression that dealing with heating, sealing, moisture, and ventilation take more time that the actual structural part of house design.

I was surprised to fond out that, after looking at weather charts, the top of the highest mountain in Australia has almost the same climate as Toronto, Ontario… a metropolitan area of 6 million people.

High of 63F tomorrow, warming to 75F on Saturday…but 50% chance of rain. :frowning:

24C max 11C min sunny weather here is Delhi. 18C right now at 7:20 pm.
People can come over without hassle. Govt. of India has opened visa on arrival for US citizens.

I asked my husband about this, and he said, “No.” Sorry.

A house is basically a sealed unit with engineered air exchange here. A kind of problem that people can get into is making an old house too airtight by fixing old, leaky windows, without increasing the air exchange. It can lead to “sick building syndrome.”

I’ve mentioned this here before; we were very surprised to learn about houses in New Zealand that didn’t have insulation or furnaces. Our transplanted Canadian friend who told us about it was not impressed; we can handle cold here just fine, but we expect to be able to stay warm inside. I think there might be a good industry for Canadians to take our house technology over there.

So Melbourne is going to get it’s **hottest day since last summer tomorrow. ** 40C which is 104F. Not exactly my idea of a nice, sunny day. :frowning:

But we’re lucky here: mostly hot spells last a couple of days at most, then followed up by a lovely cool change blowing in from the south. Temps can drop 10-15C in just a matter of minutes.

Bliss, sheer bliss.

Well, it’s -18C here, up from -28 this morning. It’s warming up to a normal minus single digits by the end of the week.

Maybe even rain - I live in a weird place. Not Kingston weird but weird enough.

I live in Central Thailand, about 120 miles north of Bangkok. Today may be the very coldest day in the 19 years I’ve lived here. The Celsius measure wouldn’t impress you Northerners, but we’re not used to jackets and double blankets here, so it seems quite freezing.

By February however, odds are excellent we’ll be complaining about the heat.

-13ºC with the wind bringing it down to -22ºC right now, and snowing. I’m off to walk to Safeway to get some stuff.

See ya!

Be sure to wear a cat on your face.

Weird. It’s -2 here in Oshawa, comfortable enough to not wear gloves. Usually, when there are temperature differentials across the province like that, it’s pretty windy.

My cat barely sets foot outside all winter. Little fuzzy wimp.
