Scroll down to fruit. Thanks for the help.
Maybe a ginkgo “fruit”? They rot, get smooshy and stinky. File:Ginkgo fruit.jpg - Wikimedia Commons
Black walnuts are round and green and smell but are usually bigger than golf balls.
Is this it?
(Black Walnut)
I wouldn’t describe green walnuts as ‘stinky’. They have a fairly strong smell, but it’s a spicy, resinous aroma - quite pleasant, IMO.
Agreed. They also run quite a bit bigger than a golf ball - typically closer to the size of a tennis ball.
It depends on the species and location - the wild walnuts here (Southern UK) never get as big as a tennis ball - and at this time of year they may not be quite fully grown anyway - the shells start to harden inside the fruit around about mid July, but continue growing until the end of August.
The ones I usually see around here are almost halfway between those sizes. When I saw the OP, I thought about saying walnuts, but saying they were usually ____-sized, and I couldn’t think of anything.
Pool ball sized, maybe?
Yes, black walnuts are closer to tennis ball size, when fully grown. This time of year, well around here upstate NY, they are closer to golf ball size.
And I hate the bastards. I’ve got to go out and pick up a five gallon bucket of them before mowing the lawn. My driveway is currently a black sticky mess because of them.
They are kind of strong smelling. Smell an English Walnut once, they are much more pleasant. And I believe tastier when green, if I’m to believe the squirrels that like to finish them off before getting to the black walnuts.
