It's happening! It's happening! Royal baby

Really? Wow. I’m amazed. I would’ve thought they’d want to make a totally clean break from the British polity, either becoming a republic or (less likely) reestablishing an exclusively Scottish constitutional monarchy.

It’s probably to do with the fact that the current lineage of the British monarchy does still come ultimately from James VI (who was Scottish).

So having a clean break from everything British would also be breaking with some of Scotland’s own history…sort of.

[I’m ignoring the fact that the current lineage is quite foreign]

Aside from what Arch Trout says, the Royal family are quite popular in Scotland. The Queen’s mother was Scottish, and it’s her residence of choice for her summer holidays. The Royal family have always been very open about their love of Scotland.

The family isn’t really regarded as English, they rise above such petty definitions and are really sort of ‘British’.

So Scotland regard them as just as Scottish as anything else.

No, I think they are regarded as much more English, really. As for the queen’s mother, she was born in England, to English parents, but spent some time at her parents little holiday home in Scotland (Glamis Castle).

Eek! I got her name wrong - it was always the Thedearoldqueenmumgawdbless’er. Shit, I will be beheaded or something.

If you want to be flabbergasted, just read some of the bits about what the SNP says will happen once Scotland is free. Keeping the Queen is just one thing. They also want to keep the pound, the BBC (popular shows of course), reraise historic Scottish regiments and keep the right to use the Vehicle Licensing Authority in…Swansea.

Good luck to the poor dears, but I do think that they need to be sent a dictionary with the entry “Independance” underlined.

Yeah, the separatist idea is full of contradictions. There are so many strong cultural, not to mention economic links, between Scotland and the rest of the UK that full independence doesn’t really make sense. On the question of what currency to use, the original plan was to join the euro, but suddenly that doesn’t seem like such a great idea. And there is a question mark over whether Scotland would even be in the EU, let alone the euro. It might have to re-apply as a new state. So now they’re talking about about keeping the British pound (although the rest of the UK has not been consulted on whether it would actually want to be in a currency union with independent Scotland).

So, currency union, same head of state, culture and economy closely integrated with the the UK… what kind of independence is that? Beyond the level of autonomy that Scotland already has?

Probably a moot question, because polls are currently about two-to-one against independence.
