I’m guessing his last words before the shooting were “Hey, watch this!”
I think the sheriff’s deputy summed it up best: “You know, there’s not really a lot to the story other than don’t drink and shoot guns.”

I’ve demonstrated “double-safety” features of 1911-style handguns, but never by pointing it at myself, or anyone else, in the process.

Sounds like a good night of drinking to me. Had one last shot that went straight to his head, immediately picked up, was fucked for sure in the car and then dropped off at the nearest station.
No argument about how dead he would have felt the next day. The biggest shock to come is that his liver’s shot too. I expect there’ll be an enquiry.
