Don’t be short-sighted. You know how you’re always asking yourself, “I wonder what sort of idle chit-chat people were making right before Valentine’s Day four years ago?” or “Did people in 2003 have any opinions on the best way to baste one’s turkey for Thanksgiving?” Sure, at the time you wouldn’t have thought that information was worth saving in its own locked forum, but now you’d give anything for it. But no one took the time to set it aside for you and now it’s lost forever.
So when the time comes and you need to know some casual opinions on good Halloween costumes for 2011, you’re going to be grateful that it’s so easy to find.

I’ll throw in another vote for kill it /remove it / move it to the bowels of the SDMB. Its the forum equilavent of a junky assed rust bucket of a car up on blocks in front of a halfway decent double wide trailer.
I think it should stay, and this thread should be stickied or turned into an announcement. It really clues newbies into the absurdly stubborn “because I said so” attitude of the folks running things. You want new folks to get a good feel for the culture of the board, and this baffling decision really nails it.
And newbies will get all that just by seeing a closed forum?
