It's nice to know Nigeria is cracking down

I got this today:

ATTENTION Beneficiary!

This is to inform you that your long approved Compensation of US$500,000 ( FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND UNITED STATES DOLLARS) has now been played through western Union under a special arrangement from the ECONOMIC AND FINANCIAL CRIMES COMMISSION OF NIGERIA(EFCC). This is one of her government’s numerous efforts to compensate those who were affected by the misconducts of her citizens via the internet thereby discrediting what the country stands for. In her bid to curb this menace, the EFCC has over the years made arrests and investigations which revealed that you have been affected by SCAM, hence we have sent your compensation of US$500,000
You are now to contact Det. <name> of the EFCC via email: <address> or call his Phone: <number> for all details with which to pick up your compensation at any western union location near you.

You are to forward him your details such as

  1. Full name:
  2. Contact address:
  3. Telephone Number:
  4. A copy of your Identity material either International Passport, Drivers license or work I.d as a valid identification to enable him make verifications from their list to check illegal claims.
  5. SCAMMED VICTIM/REF/PAYMENTS CODE: EFCC/06654/NG $500,000 USD

Note: Before the MTCN to pick up your compensation of US$500,000 will be given to you by Det. Usman, you have to provide him with the details as above to enable him make verifications to avoid illegal and unauthorized claim.

We remain at your service.

Regards!
"WESTERN UNION MONEY TRANSFER "

I feel so reassured that I’m getting my half million back.

It’s very nice of them to convert the money into USDs for you. I’m jealous. I could really use a half a mil. The quarter mil that I got from the dude whose uncle left him a hefty inheritance that he couldn’t access until I added him as a joint owner on my US checking account is about gone.

Those Nigerians certainly have an interesting sense of humor.

Yeah I got this piece of crap today. Not so much Nigerian but annoying.

Those Tech Support guys may know accounts, but they sure don’t know how to English too good.

And if you give them the information, you friends will soon find out about your bad luck London trip.

I never knew that Nigeria’s national dish was phish!

Most of the so-called “Nigerian” scams are laughably bad, but recently I’ve noticed that some scam letters are becoming much more sophisticated in both their usage of English and in the plausibility of the “hook”. We will need to be much more aware of the trend in this area.

I think their first course of action would be to pare down the reward from half a mil to, oh, $25.
