"It's not a remake; it's a new movie based on the same source"

Poisonville!

I haven’t read Red Harvest, and I haven’t seen Yojimbo in eons, but I suspect Yojimbo is roughly inspired by Red Harvest (I think Kurasawa misremembered), and not a direct adaptation of it.

I’ve read Red Harvest. Yojimbo is very much like Red Harvest and not at all like The Glass Key. In fact, if I recall correctly, Last Man Standing credits Red Harvest and is beat for beat the same as the novel(la).

Hammett created many of the tough guy stereotypes we see across countless movies.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013) has slightly more in common with the 1947 film than it does with the original short story.

How about Howard Hawks’ Rio Bravo/El Dorado/Rio Lobo? El Dorado was a loose adaptation of a novel by Harry Brown, and Rio Lobo is just a rehash of El Dorado, both scripts having been written by Leigh Brackett. I have no idea how to classify this triptych.
