Sometimes, when old-timers are gathered around the pot bellied stove, one of them might toss out a joke or comment that brings a smile to the faces of his friends, but leaves the newcomer wondering what the fuck.
In a year or three, you might smile at Tracer’s comment just like I did. Here, have a pickle.
Well… yeah. Particularly since, as has been pointed out, it’s explicitly allowed by the Moderators of this board.
A lengthy hijack is one thing. One witty post? Another thing. We understand that you think you have a legitimate complaint. What we’re trying to say is, that’s just sort of the way things are around here. Like it or lump it? Love it or leave it? Life goes on…
I was going to come up with a witty, off-topic response just to tweak the OP’s nose and make myself look clever, but you knwo what? 'Tain’t worth it. Instead, I’ll settle for, “Shut the fuck up you whiney, humorless little shmuck.” I think it’ll get the point across, and probably be more cathartic, too. Here goes…
<clears throat>
Shut the fuck up you whiney, humorless little shmuck!
Sometimes humor can be used to effectively make a point. Let’s take an example you railed against in the OP
Yeah, it’s hyperbole. The children know it’s hyperbole. If the grim spectre of red death doesn’t know it’s hyperbole I shall take a long walk off a short pier.
The POINT he was trying to make, that you clearly missed in in your frothing bat out of hell mad dash to the pit, is that it is clearly much easier to turn something off rather than get upset by it.
Lest retarded children in Zimbabwe not fully grasp this subtle concept, I shall repeat it again for the second time: it is clearly much easier to turn something off rather than get upset by it.
So my suggestion to you is to make like Ann and Nancy Wilson and take it to Heart.
Appletreats: I note that you have not posted in any of the threads you cited in your OP, so what’s with the “let the rest of us have a discussion”? You were not taking part in any any of the discussions.
Interestingly enough, this is fairly typical of my normal conversation - toss in the occasional smartass comment or observation. I don’t know if I could have a conversation otherwise. It’s all part of my charm, you know.
Have to agree with most everyone here, and DISAGREE with the OP.
Plus, I looked in the link posted in the OP’s op, and I could have SWORN that it said that being funny was okay.
I think the most relevant post here was the one stating that if no one “tried to be funny” that this would be the most sterile and least interesting place on the net (sorry for the mangled paraphrasing).
hear hear
And btw, if I wanna “try to be funny” by golly I WILL.
Good job kid: you’ve wheeled out whiney loser newbie reason #2* right on schedule. (You’re all mean. I’ve just come here to piss and moan about how things aren’t done to MY liking. So you’re all jerks for not liking me. You should be grateful for my comments.")
Tell ya what: until you put in some sweat-equity: do some posting, share some not-whiney thoughts, your bitching is (at least to me) unwelcome as a skunk at a picnic. Until you’ve done some time and seen what the place has to offer before insulting it and us, may I offer you a steaming hot cup of “shut the fuck up”?
I eagerly await your next performance.
Fenris
*(Reason #1 is similar but involves the troll type of newbie whining that we don’t like him after he came here to trash the place)
BTW, the reason why I eventually joined this board was because so many of the posts, especially in the BBQ Pit tend to be hilarious! <b>daowajan</b> would show me the most hilarious and interesting posts and I liked what I saw
If the SDMB were any different, I doubt I would have bothered.
