I’m sick of people who come in to threads that are going fine and on-topic and suddenly feel the need to dazzle us all with their amazing wit. I’m not talking about new users doing this - maybe the don’t know better. I’m talking about the users with hundreds or thousands of posts. Get over yourself! IT’S NOT FUCKING FUNNY. Keep your stale wit to yourself and let the rest of us have a discussion.
My point is that these people are not funny and it’s a waste of time to have to read and scroll past this stuff. Just because you’re a veteran doesn’t mean you have a right to post stupid off-topic shit into a thread, whether it derails it or not.
You mean to say, sometimes people think they’re funny and you don’t share their sense of humour? Dear god, how can this happen in such a world as ours?
Welcome to the SDMB, appletreats - but you might find your stay a whole hell of a lot more enjoyable if you read those sticky notes and the FAQ in the About this Message Board forum, so you have an idea of how we act around here. We’ll find your stay more enjoyable if you did, at least.
Y’know, when you wake up with a twist in your shorts and feel a need to fire off an angry missive to the Pit, it is usually a good idea to stop between the final period and the Submit button, re-read the post, and see if you really want people to know that you are that easily angered by trivialities.
Some cheap shots are complete duds, some are hilarious.
Overreactions are nearly always funny–but not in the way envisioned by the poster.
Actually, they’re from (in order) CS, CS, and GQ. But find me the “don’t post any jokes in CS, MPSIMS, and the Pit” statements from the mods, and I’ll withdraw my objection. In fact, I’d think that GQ’s regulations about joking around would be more strict than those three boards mentioned, no?
I hope you brought your pencil and paper today, appletreats, because you just got taken to school.
Re the OP, I found tracer’s quoted comment to be welcome and quite humorous. And asking the grim spectre of red death not to make smartassed not-necessarily-OT comments is like asking the wind not to blow, or something.
We knew apple. note that tom correct said “not in the way envisioned by the poster”. See, (deconstruction of comedy here), it’s the juxtoposition of things that makes it funny.
He knows. That’s actually exactly what he was saying.
And Ferret Herder said what I was going to say. When I first read that GQ sticky I was surprised that it so explicitly allowed drive-by hamming in GQ. At any rate, if it’s cool there, it’s definitely acceptable in CS.
Sorry for posting twice.
On preview. Dammit wring.
Well damn White Lightning, it appears you didn’t read some of the responses to that post. And you said in your post that red death’s posts are not-necessarily-OT. Uh, ok. So we should be allowing off-topic posts?
I think I have a legitimate complaint about the SDMB here, btw.
