It's official, I've got a big pair!

Heh.

I had my tonsils out when I was 11. Worst experience of my life. They gave me Morphine to dull the pain, only finding out later that I had an intolerance to Morphine. Wow, that sucked, lemme tell you.

All of you who have had your tonsils out can attest to the pain experienced afterwards, eating hurts, swallowing water hurts, breathing hurts.

A little info for you guys, intolerance does not mean allergy. It means that your stomach does not tolerate the addition of said drug into your system. I think you can see where I’m going with this.

I threw up for a week after that. On top of the open sores in my throat. And I couldn’t eat, because I would cry. Then I would throw up again because crying made me sick. Then when the scabs came off, I threw up again. On top of new open sores.

God, that was the worst experience of my life.

The summer between my sophomore and junior years of college, Fourth of July weekend, actually, I came down with strep and mono at the same time. I couldn’t eat or even drink water. A few days later, I found out that I had become allergic to penicillin, too. I lost 7# in two days. I couldn’t take the pain pills because I had to eat with them or else I would throw up. I couldn’t eat because the pain was so much, it hurt to drink water. My uvula was so swollen it was resting on my tongue and my tonsils were almost bumping into each other, but the doctors, in their wisdom, thought that it would be a better idea to leave them in. In the eight years since, I’ve had strep throat at least 20 times, but never enough to warrant surgery (6-times or more in one year) and every time, I’m laid-up for at least three days, hacking and aching.

One week of a painful throat and no more strep and possibly no more apnea? Man, there was never any question in my mind.

What does a tonsilectomy cost, anyway?

I’ve wanted mine out for years, but I know my insurance would not cover it.

I don’t know. Mine should be covered because my Ear-Nose-Throat doctor (you’ve got to see a specialist) recommended the surgey for my apnea and strep. If it had just been for snoring, no go.

I’m not saying that you should look into that, but you might want to see an ENT specialist.

A week after my UPPP I was back to work. Of course, I didn’t have my septum done because my crappy insurance company wouldn’t pay for it. The 2+ weeks for a full recovery is correct, but you’re only “laid up” for about a week.

I was also told the 70% number. Who knows. I felt it was worth a try despite those odds.

And with regard to being “taken care of” afterward I can confirm from my experience with the lovely Priscilla after my surgery that I was in absolutely no mood to frolic, and anything vigorous put me at risk of ripping out stitches.

…I’ve mostly covered this in the posts I did last night, but since I already wrote it…

Yes, I know that I won’t be back to 100% in a week, but I shouldn’t be bed-riden…uh, laid-up in bed…hmmm, well, I should be able to go back to work in about a week. IIRC, I’m actually going in for a UPPP, but if I said that, then everyone would be asking “Hey, what in the heck is a UPPP?!” so I went with the simplistic “tonsils.” I also recognize that this will not a be a certain cure of the apnea, but if it helps at all, that’s a good thing. Also, and this is of as much importance to me, it will get rid of the recurring strep-throat issue, so that’ll be nice.

Okay, you’ve given me a lot to work with here, but, I’m strong enough to resist even your manly wiles. :stuck_out_tongue:

On to the OP:

Wow - surgery. Sucks. However, it’ll be great once it’s done. Maybe you won’t even need the CPAP (CPPP???) thingy after you get all healed up.

Unfortunately, I’ll only be able to provide virtual [sub]pillow[/sub] fluffing, little pats on the head [sub]the one between your shoulders![/sub], and a little comforting baby-voice that says, “Oh, poor baby! Let me turn on ESPN for you, tuck in the blanket around your legs, and freshen up your drink. Poooooooorrrrr baby.” Howzat?

Plus, your surgery is the day before my birthday (2nd) so I’m sure that your proximity to my greatness will only help.

My relatives will not be flying over next week, which cleared the way for, green-lighted, if you will, my getting the tonsil surgery ASAP.

This means that next Thursday, September 27[sup]th[/sup], I’ll be going under the knife.

As I understand it, I should be fairly useless for the first day or so (more useless than normal) and that I’ll be bed-bound for a week, at least. Because of this, and due to that saddening lack of available mistresses, [sub]coughGeoBabecough[/sub] I’ll likely be spirited away by my parents and tended to in sunny Dayton, Ohio (this is subject to change, though, IYKWIM.)

I wonder if they’ll let me have someone take pictures? Wouldn’t that be something to put up on the site!

Baby, believe me, if there were any way I could, I would. Why you gotta live so far away, huh?

It’s not by choice, believe me

Holy fright, thinks, that’s soon!

Well, better to get it out of the way than having it looming over your head, eh?

You know I’ll be thinking of you, however, you’ve definately put a crimp in my timeline as regards the treat I was going to send for your recovery.

:puts on thinking cap to plan:

Can we call you Deep Throat from now on?

I remain well-tonsilled, but my wife has discovered the cheap and easy way to avoid tonsillectomy: don’t have any tonsils. Yep, she was born without 'em. And without an appendix, leading several doctors (at various points) to marvel at the lack of an appendectomy scar during ultrasounds.

Yep, I married a mutant. But a cute one.:stuck_out_tongue:

<perking up at the idea of “recovery gifts”>

Say, that’s a swell idea!

Awww, Bunny, you know that just keeping me in your thoughts is enough (though gifts are always appreciated when delivered in person  .)

Oh, and jr, no, you may not.

So, since this was surgery and all, I was planning on digging up some stroopwaffels (sp?! and there’s a thread around somewhere, dagnabbit!) for ya.

However, the only place I could find to buy them was a place out of Canada and they wanted $18 for shipping!!! On top of the cost of the cookies (which was really negligible, IMO). Plus, how long would it take for me to get them?

Okay, says I, I could probably make some. They’d be fresher and (nose held high) better than store bought. However, I have no idea what a pizzelle iron is and why it’s necessary to use one to make these cookies. Plus, how would I ship cookies with carmel in the middle of them? Wouldn’t it run all over and make a mess?

Time, man! You’ve left me no time! I could overcome these difficulties if I just had more time. :tearing hair like mad scientist:
:sigh:

Back to the drawing board! :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m already in the US. Of course, it would cost a lot more than $18 to ship me, but it would be well worth it!

Yeah, but then he’d never get better 'cause he’d get no sleep!

…wish me luck.

My parents arrived tonight and will be sheparding me for the next few days. Since I’m be goin under general anesthetic, I won’t really be able to drive for, oh, 24 hours or so after the surgery. I’ve got to be there at 0630 tomorrow :frowning:

I’m not nervous or anything, just sort of <blah> actually. I’ve never had to go to the hospital for anything, so this will be a first for me (though in truth, it’s an Ear-Nose-Throat Surgery Center and not a hospital, per se, but in my book, it’s close enough.

I’ll be back as soon as I can, though I’ll be posting from a couch in Dayton for the next couple-5 days.

Good luck, honey! Email me if you need any extra-special virtual attention.
