It's official: Playstation Plus is a genuinely good value

I’ve determined that PS+ is not the same valueless cash grab that XBL is. I’ve had XBL since I got my 360 in 06 and picked up PS+ a year ago or so when I got my Vita. The games library you get for free easily pays you back for your $50 a year or whatever it costs. I think I’ve got 7-8 games for my Vita and 10-15 games for my PS3 already in a year, and many are genuine AAA titles, not just duds or 5 year old games like XBL has started throwing in. This opinion was solidified when I read that the free games for Jan are Bioshock Infinite and DMC for PS3. I was getting ready to buy Infinite used for $20 a few days ago. Glad I didn’t. I think DMC goes for $20 or so used now too. Can’t remember which Vita games are free in Jan. I already got 2 PS4 games for free as well (Resogun and Contrast).

Does anyone else on here pay for +? I’m curious what your view is. Is there any reason not to pay for it?

(No I’m not shilling for Sony, though it could read that way. Lol)

I picked up PS+ when I picked up the PS4, so I haven’t built up many free games yet. Right now it looks like the PS3 is getting much better selections than the PS4 - I’m a little miffed that I’m missing out on Bioshock Infinite, having traded the PS3 in just yesterday.

Still, yeah, the free games are generally of quite good quality.

I bought it for my son for Christmas when it was on sale for $30. Almost bought him Borderlands 2 as well but luckily learned it was on PS+ for this month. Between that, Bioshock Infinite and Devil May Cry, it’s already more than paid for itself. I know the gamers only last through the subscription period but by next December he’ll have long moved on from all those games anyway.

Yeah, forgot about border lands 2 this month.

Just now figuring that out, Cubsfan? I jumped on when they put up Infamous 2 back in June '12.

Bravo, it’ll be awhile before PS4 gets the big hitters. Clicking on a few AAA links in IGC list on Wikipedia, most games were released 1-2 years before their appearance on PlayStation Plus. There are a few under 1 year: DmC, IBioShock: nfinite, Hitman: Absolution, Warhammer 40000, Spec Ops: The Line. Starhawk single player was only 5 months.

PS4 still has DriveClub to look forward to, though.

I haven’t any experience of XBox Live at all, but the PS+ is well worth the asking price - I’ve got a ton of stuff off them for either nothing or very cheap.

Will try it when my PS4 arrives which is supposed to be by Jan 14th. Never played online before but I look forward to it.

I’ve had PS Plus for several years now. According to my services list in the PS3, I started the account in June 2011, so obviously the “we’re sorry” free trial of PS Plus worked on me. They’ve also managed to get me to buy several games thanks to the free ones–Borderlands 2, X-COM: Enemy Within, and Bioshock Infinite all come to mind right away. And I’ve definitely bought quite a bit of stuff with the discounts. And it’s nice that the downloads don’t expire as long as you are a member.

It got to be so bad that I had to upgrade my PS3 hard drive to a 500 gig drive and I’m close to having completely filled that up again.

A question:

Can you re-download games that you’ve previously gotten for free on PS+ if you delete it, or is the game “yours” only as long as you don’t uninstall it?

Never used PS+, but XBL is the most insidious piece of shit ever so I’m sure it’s better than that. This coming from a MS honk mind you.

You keep it and can download again. There’s a “Downloads” menu option buried somewhere - I forget exactly where, and my PS3 is currently being used for Skylanders Swapforce.

Indeed, if you’ve currently got a PS3 and are thinking about maybe getting a PS4 next year sometime, you can login to PS+ on your PC through the website and claim free PS4 games, which you will be able to download when you get your new console.

The game is only “yours” for as long as you are a PS+ subscriber; After that it becomes a chunk of occupied but unusable hard drive space.

I dunno. I have yet to get a game I actually wanted off PS+. I tend to buy games that I want new, or close to it, and it seems like instead of offering lesser known games that people might’ve missed out on as the freebies (Exception: Gravity Rush, but that requires you to have a Vita, and who does that? :P) they seem to be offering “older” AAA titles that most people have already bought or decided not to.

I’m really not impressed with PS+ thus far.

This is true, but it should be pointed out that any games that you put money towards whilst you were a member (and got a cheap deal on) will remain playable and redownloadable after you stop. Also, free themes and avatars remain usable, if that’s important.

The only downside I’ve seen so far is when you have a game for free from PS+, but it later goes on an incredible sale, you cannot buy it in case you ever think you might not resubscribe to PS+.

PS4 is arriving tomorrow. What are the best games other than need for speed and call of duty?

Resogun is PS4’s highest rated exclusive. I’m a Killzone fan so I have that but it’s gotten mixed reviews. Both COD: Ghosts and Battlefield 4 are rated higher. To tie into the thread, Resogun is a free download with a PlayStation Plus subscription. It’s by Housemarque, Super Stardust devs.

Bought my PS+ account last month with the Amazon $30 deal. I mainly got it to backup my saves since a hard drive crash last year had me lose everything.

I’m pleased. I downloaded and am finishing Shadow of the Colossus now. I think I might get Borderlands 2 next.
