Crow accepted her award for pop-rock female artist wearing a white T-shirt emblazoned with the message “war is not the answer” in black sequins.
“I think war is based in greed and there are huge karmic retributions that will follow. I think war is never the answer to solving any problems. The best way to solve problems is to not have enemies.”
The best way to solve problems is to not have enemies. Seriously, what planet does she come from? There will always be enemies of the United States and other free capitalistic nations due to the lifestyle that we all live, including Sheryl Crow. Most of these enemies see kindness as a sign of weakness, and only respond to force.
These famous people need a swift kick in the ass back down to reality.
Someone should go up to her and hit her in the face as hard as they can. When she gets up and tries to fight back, explain to her that war is never an answer. Then, hit her again. Repeat as long as necessary.
Note: This is satire. Please do not actually hit Crow or anyone else unless they hit you first.
She sounds a little dippy, yeah. She may even be wrong.
But I refuse to treat the belief that violence, especially on the scale of warfare, is never justified, as celebrity nonsense. It’s a noble philosophy, it may be the nobles of philosophy. It may not be the right philosophy (although in the case of Iraq, I think it is), but it’s one that deserves to be respected and considered.
So Sheryl Crow is not a genius; her idealistic comments at the American Music Awards aren’t really a point of debate, and in fact aren’t really all that objectionable. She’s opposed to violence. That’s a legitimate philosophical position. THAT is worth a good, serious debate, but it’s not a reason to blast her.
Actually, she didn’t say that she’s opposed to violence. She said that war is never the answer. And I don’t believe that’s worth a debate–in fact I don’t consider it a legitimate philosophical position. It was best stated (IMO) by Heinlein in Starship Troopers:
To be fair, the argument he’s attacking is that “violence never settles anything” which is not quite the same as what Crow said. (I won’t even get into Tom Servo. )
That sounds ridiculous. Bin Laden’s network is probably amongst the first to wage an unjust war against the US for reasons related to “lifestyle”. And even he has relatively more logical reasons such as power, US troops in Saudi Arabia etc.
I always got a chuckle out of the fact that they replaced the city of Carthage with that of Hiroshima in the movie version of the same scene. I don’t quite know why.
