It's official....

Today I have dual-citizenship. I am a citizen of both the United States and Ireland. I feel so strange. Like maybe I should start speaking with an Irish accent or something.

Ireland allows those who’s grandparents were born in Ireland to apply for citizenship.

Now I’m working on my Dominican Republic citizenship. About 5 generations of my family lived there so I think I’ve got a pretty good shot.

I can now refer to myself as a Croation-Parsi-Irish-American.

I have dual citizenship, too. When Latvia became free from the Soviet Union, those whose parents were born there could become citizens.

But now I’m worried that if there’s a war or some crisis I’ll have to go over there and fight or something. I’m too spoiled in North America to think what instability I might have to face in Eastern Europe.

Well, on a lighter note, Oldscratch, the best bonus is that getting through Customs is a breeze.

My mother’s father was born in Ireland - do I count? How did you go about doing this anyway?

Contacting the Irish consulate closest to you is a good way. Yeah, if you can prove it you can get that citizenship

Great news fellow Irishman . Now you’ll have to give that liver of your a good seeing too , to celebrate

Any plans to come over ?

Incidently, this is the exact method the Irish also use to put together a decent football team. “If your dogs great-grandfather visited Ireland in 1923, you TOO can become a Paddy!”

Same for the Netherlands team.

If you’ve had wood anywhere near your feet you qualify for citizenship. If you own a fondue pot you could be an elected official. If you have ever seen a soccer ball you qualify for the national team.

Good point Coldfire , can you play Oldscratch ? We need all the help we can get .

If you’re not that good we can put you on the subs. bench and put you on for extra time and penalties . Anybody can score a penalty, isn’t that right Coldie ?

Goddammit yojimbo, that was low

Chief go for citizenship , from reading your posts to the ladies you seem to be almost 100% wood

BTW : It should be mentioned that along with citizenship to one of the finest nations in the world . You also can travel and work throughout Europe without having to worry about visa’s or work permits . Pretty handy , eh !

Anyone else have a problem with dual citizenships? I mean, can you split loyalty up so easily? Isn’t citizenship an affirmation of your loyalty to a country? Granted, the US has very few conflicts with Ireland, but shouldn’t you need to at least declare one over the other as a primary? This is not specifically with Ireland, but any country.
(full disclosure note: I qualify for dual citizenship under the same auspices as OS, but have never applied)

Now that you’re an Irish citizen, become an artist and avoid paying income taxes.

You know. I hate to disapoint you Yojimbo, but if I was to choose a football team I’d have to go with good ol Ajax in Amsterdam. I lived there for a couple of months and went to all the games. Good ol Ajax youth.
And I’m definetly considering moving to europe now. I’ve never been to Ireland though i’d like too.

You’d be surprised about football and SF though. It’s quite popular here. I think it has to do with our large French and Latin American population. When France won the world cup we had rioting up and down Haight St. It was great.
We also have a little something called the Latin Leagues. Very competitive football that’s played out in Golden Gate park. Last year during one of the games a ref made a questionable call and got his ear bit off by a fan. Yes, we even have football hooligans.

Oldscatch - this is getting a bit toooo spooky. You were at the Height riots? Was that you on the hood of that Chevy truck across from McDonalds, throwing streamers at the crowd? Nah, couldn’t be…

Nah. I was down in Frogtown at Cafe Bastille.

I can’t wait untill Krispy spots this thread

Ajax Amsterdam, Olé Olé!

Hey, oldscratch, where did you live in A’dam? I live there myself!

It’s been a while. I stayed with some friends in a dumpy apartment complex by the krijtsstraat station. A little ways out of town. I lived there for about 3 months. Not very long so my memory it’s a little rusty.
