It's okay to gang rape your sister?

Okay, I heard this on the news today and I have been unable to track down the source…has anyone else heard of this?

In Pakistan, a boy was caught walking with a girl of a higher caste, apparently a no-no over there. As his punishment, Pakistani officials have ordered that the boy’s 18-yeard old sister be gang-raped.

I’m hoping this is a snopes thing…am I the only one to have heard about this?

Link to an Associated Press story on it.
Incomprehensively barbaric.

Not much to add here, except that I saw the story and was stunned. Even if the boy’s action is verboten in that particular culture, how about actually punishing the perpetrator rather than an innocent bystander…

I’m not necessarily saying that they should punish the kid. But that’s another argument for another time.

Beyond belief. I’m ashamed to be considered the same species as anyone who would think up and/or perpetrate such a punishment. People like this need culled from the genetic an social herd, regardless of cultural mores.

Oh God I thought it was a joke. I take some SMALL solace that this was tribal and not the ruling gov’t of Pakistan. Will the girl be charged with adultery now?

Can’t we as humans agree that there are certain things, regardless of social culture, that are evil? Murder, gang-raping a young girl, etc? I’m horrified!

Bizzare. I bet Mohommed would have a few choice words for those villagers.

By the way, the knowledge and resources that can be found in this message board are phenonemal. Barely five minutes after I posted, an answer to what I thought was an obscure story was found. I am in awe. You guys are unbelievable!

Whoa. That is…horrifying.

I wonder how common that is. That’s seriously fooked up.

I have to say, though, that when I read the OP, and it said “Pakastani officials” - I thought it meant a rough equivalent of cops, not the Pakastani (Mastoi) Tribal council. It was a little misleading for me. When I read the article, I thought, “So it wasn’t the country’s representatives who ordered this…it was a tribal council…”

Tibs.

Unbelievable. I thank I God I live in the States.

Yeah.
Gang rape practically never happens here.

Oh. My. God.

No no no no non no no!!!

MOMMY!!!

You’re right, of course. I was only posting what I had heard on the radio, so I did get some of the info wrong. I’m glad to see that “Pakistani officials” are investigating.

Not as part of a quasi-judicial sentence. Surely you understood her point, didn’t you?

The very purpose of the thread is to express outrage over a gang rape that was orchestrated by a group who has the power to dispense “justice”.

I’m not being jingoistic, I’m just pointing out the massive difference in her point and your rebuttal.

If this is the local custom, wouldn’t it have been heavily publicized by now? Is it possible that this is some sort of propaganda, akin to the Jewish Purim/blood pastries thing?

I guess I just don’t want to believe this is true.

No, but it is highly unlikely that a judge is going to sentence me to being gang raped when my brother commits a crime.

I’m retiring from the Earth. It’s just too fucked up for my taste.

I hope they don’t say anything about this on TV, as those waves are going out into space. I can just see what the Intergalactic Council would think of this. They’d probably aim their photon cannon at Karachi and Islamabad.

and yet we all get so outraged when the fine military machine paid for by our taxes bombs these same people into (farther into) the stoneage! make up your minds!! are they innocent bystanders or are they savages???

Jesus was in a coma.

Yeah! Because of course there’s no middle ground between angel and demon.

I don’t get too outraged; I supported the invasion of Afghanistan, with the attendant air strikes. But since you asked:

11 year old boy and 18 year old sister: Innocents.

Gang-raping men, council who directs it, and men standing outside cheering: Savages.

Now show me the bomb that differentiates between the two – not that we were ever bombing Pakistan, anyway.
