The Royal Canadian Legion puts on a poppy campaign to raise money for veterans every year - I’ve got my poppy!
I don’t know why, but the campaign caught me off guard this year – I was surprised when I spotted a poppy today on someone else’s lapel.
I guess this means I ought to raid the laundry jar for cash money and get to the liquor store at the earliest possible opportunity.
It caught me off guard, too, when I saw one on a newscaster. Then I thought about it - “Oh yeah, Remembrance Day is only two weeks away!”
I still have one of the old ones with the green centre pinned into the cloth of the roof of my car. It’s kind of dried out and falling apart and I don’t dare remove it to wear it, though. I’ll have to keep an eye out for a place to get one to wear!
I hope they have the big Montreal Remembrance Day ceremony at McGill like they did last year - it was an impressive event and I enjoyed being able to see most of it between classes. Our prof actually let us out a few minutes before 11, and we got outside just in time for the 21 cannon salute to start (incredibly loud, incredibly awesome!)
Does it count if this Yankee tossed some poppy seeds out the other day onto the dirt to bloom next spring?
Thanks for the reminder, OP, I’ll get one off the Royal British Legion at the train station tonight.
Did you think about veterans and their contributions to society as you did it?
I’ve had mine for a few days now.
I never go without at this time of year.
I traditionally buy my first poppy on Novemeber 1st, which I have done.
I traditionally lose my first poppy on November 1st. Also done.
The pins are actually quite malleable. I bend mine almost 180 degrees. Haven’t lost one in years.
I poke the end of the pin through one of the petals - that keeps it on my jacket, too. My husband says the point is to lose them and keep buying more.
About half of my poppies get bought, and usually promptly lost. The other half get picked up on the sidewalk and worn until I lose them, too!
Somehow a trampled poppy makes me really sad, so unless they are really muddy, I always pick them up.
Got mine on the 31st playing at a British Legion concert. I’m in for a busy Remembrance Sunday as I’m playing trumpet at three services, including my own church at which I’m also playing the organ.
I bought a poppy today at about 2pm. By 2:30 I had already dropped it, but recovered it. I just noticed I no longer have it. It’s either caught in my coat, or it fell off somewhere on the street. If I don’t find it, I guess I’ll have to get another one!
