It's Ramadan people, stop masturbating like motherfuckers

 See, I was giving you what is known in educated circles as “the benefit of the doubt”. I thought you were ridiculing the prohibitions because you didn’t really understand what Ramadan is all about (which you blatantly don’t anyway). So, I tried to explain to you why things like masturbating during this month were forbidden, and yet, you still decided that it was more amusing to take the piss, rather than, you know, engage in intelligent conversation. Go figure. I have more important and urgent things to worry about than what some rabid anti-religionist thinks, so have fun with your piss taking.

I wonder if dying from complications of asthma invalidates your fast?

On the upside, there are 77 reasons to just let that inhaler sit there…

Not applicable. Anything that is required medically or without which would make fasting difficult is allowed. It is up to the individual follower of Islam to decide how far they take that, but avoiding medicine and dieing from that is not an act allowed or encouraged during ramadan.

Oops! I accidentally pulled a groin muscle!

For twenty minutes.

rushes off to register cuddleparties.ir

20 minutes??? :dubious:

Sure, but that was back in the sixties…

Yes, you have to go revere something or other. Toodles.

So, I take it that when it’s not Ramadan, Islam has no prohibition against masturbation? Surprisingly tolerant, that. Most Christian denominations still consider it a sin year round. I did not know that. Just goes to show, you can learn something from even the stupidest threads 'round here.

No, we were ridiculing the prohibition because it’s funny, and because Khamenei is a shit-head. I suppose next you’ll want us to stop making fun of Jack Chick tracts.

To get warmed up.

And in other news, JEWS DON’T EAT YEAST FOR A WEEK IN SPRINGTIME!

AND MORMONS DON’T DRINK COFFEE!

TEH LOLZ!

Seriously, I’m a Pagan and a definite supporter of masturbation, but this is really, really weak as a source of humour.

Is it okay if you think this is funny because it’s Khameini talking about masturbation, when he himself is such a jerkoff?

Well, I can’t argue with the bolded bit.

But pardon me for trying to educate. I’ll know better for next time.

Oh and Bryan, fuck off. My “something more important” was “finish the amendments to my astrophysics PhD” so go screw yourself.

Angua, when it says “deliberate masturbation”, could that mean then that things like well, wet dreams and such are kosher (well, you know what I mean!) because they’re not deliberate?

Guin, as far as I’m aware, wet dreams etc are fine, because well, they’re not deliberate. You don’t go to bed thinking “ooh, I’ll have a wet dream tonight”, they just happen. Its all a question of intent.

When you start the fast, you recite what’s known as a “niyat” or intention that you will keep the fast, both physically and spiritually. If you do something unintentionally, such as have a wet dream at night, or say, if you have a medical emergency and need medication, that does not invalidate your fast, as you haven’t broken your niyat. If on the other hand, you deliberately and maliciously break your fast before sunset, then you have broken your niyat, and its generally believed that that’s worse than not having kept the fast in the first place.

Gotcha. That makes sense.

Are people with health problems that would make fasting dangerous exempt? Can they do another kind of fasting?

The elderly, diabetics, pregnant women, children, and IIRC nursing mothers are all exempted from fasting.

Tagos Khameni may have opinions about what you can do with your body. This is not one of them. Non Muslims aren’t expected to fast. They can go eat with the elderly, diabetics etc.

Quite. As are those who are undertaking long journeys, where fasting would be problematic, and

They can go eat with the elderly, diabetics etc. menstruating women. In these cases, whilst one is exempted from the “no food and drink between sunrise and sunset” obligation, one is expected to keep the moral/spiritual ‘fast’, and if one is able, to help those who are keeping the dietary fast by say, getting up in the morning to make breakfast for them, or to have a meal ready for them at the time the fast is broken.

My colleague is fasting at the moment. He’s doing really well, but since he’s not allowed to drink even water, his breath stinks. This is a serious question: would swilling water or mouthwash be permitted, or is it “entering the mouth” that is the problem rather than swallowing?
