What a strangely angry little man.
Can you advise just why you’ve listed what seems to be a list of Catholic actions that have offended you as a reason for railing against Angua for clarifying a Muslim belief?
Or do you think that the followers of any religion should be blamed for the actions of all religions, through history?
Also, can you explain why a Muslim posting in a pitting about Ramadan is not minding their own business?
Sure I’m angry when someone comes into a piss taking thread and acts all self-righteous. And of course every member of the Catholic Church shares in the responsibility for the impact of the organisation in their time. By being members they enable it to exist and act.
And I’m not sick of the impact of a particular religion I’m sick of the cumulative and continuing negative impact of all religions on the world and I’m sick of the never ending claims that we should somehow ‘respect’ other people’s baseless and harmful beliefs.
If you are not angry at some level on the impact of catholic belief in birth control over the spread of Aids in Africa you should be.
Awwww, someone ruined your hilarious joke by injecting a hint of realism. That really is religious oppression, all right. I’m beginning to see your point. Do you perhaps have some sort of pamphlet or tract expressing your irritation with the commensurate number of exclamation points? Also, you seem to be making very little use of rhyme; Oxford Circus Evangelist Dude has the right idea with his “don’t be a sinner, be a winner” line. You might want to emulate him.
Ooh! Ooh! I know; write to the Telegraph. Take that, veiled overlords!
It wasn’t a pitting of Ramadan. It quite obviously was taking the piss out of the president and the whole notion. So it is hijacking. Not that I’m a great worrier about hijacking. And it’s the friggin Pit for crying out loud. When a handful of people are taking the mick about something and you then step in all po-faced and then metaphorically roll your eyes when they ignore you and continue, you should pretty much expect two barrels in the face.
For those who don’t like jokes about wanking and Islam the correct and sensible approach would be to let us exhaust ourselves, so to speak. The thread would be 15 posts long and on page 2 by now. A few of us would have had a cheap laugh and by the simple act of not opening a clearly labelled piss-taking thread everyone else could have avoided having their knickers in a twist.
Just like I wouldn’t expect a Tolkein fan to step into a joke LOTR thread and explain why it’s a book to guide our lives by. It’s inappropriate for the nature of the thread.
You really are a very stupid person. I don’t have a pamphlet, but I could google a few logic 101 sites for you. hilarious, it should not need pointing out to a presumed adult, is in the eye of the beholder. Some people find Jim Carey or Little Britain funny. Go figure I think to myself and walk on by.
If you view religion as your “enemy,” you “don’t care what Ramadan is about”, and you find the Koran “unreadable,” you can hardly object that others might dismiss your opinions with respect to Islam as biased and uninformed.
You don’t, actually. You can speak, write, march, protest, vote, pray…or do what you’re doing now. You may be somewhat circumscribed by what you can do legally, but so is everyone else. As far as your litany of grievances against the religions of the world, well, it’s hard to tell at this distance exactly how immediate and distressing they really are to you.
You want to rail against religion but don’t want religious persons to know it?
I think you’re making a mistake to conflate the sense of outrage you feel when reading about some outrage perpetrated by religious authority with the giving of offense to other individuals in a room, or on a message board. To respond to religious atrocity by insulting individual practicioners of the religion is not merely rude, but it’s petty and mean in a way that is not only distasteful, but makes your cause seem small as well.
“Actually, the notion of fasting extends to more than just not eating or drinking during the hours of daylight. You’re also supposed to remain “pure of spirit” during the whole month, which includes stuff like not picking fights, going out partying, and yes, masturbating. Additionally, having sex during the hours of daylight would also render your fast invalid. Basically, the entire point of Ramadan isn’t deprivation, its a time for reflection and meditation; the fast just serves to remind you of the fact that there is more to the world than the material aspect.”
Doesn’t seem self righteous to me? At all. She’s hardly called you names, or said your op was insulting, or acted indignantly. Where’s the self righteousness?
Yes, very bad thing, no doubt about that. Just struggling to understand why this is somehow a reason to get angry at a Muslim elaborating on the observance of Ramadan? A brush of that size would be dead handy for decorating my house, but seems a tad unwieldy when used to criticise someone’s beliefs?
Oh, yes please; I always did find the ontological argument for God rather funny - I imagine the converse is just as entertaining. Oh, too late; I have to go and teach a logic course. Hurry up, do, or my students may fall into wicked idolatrous ways. Or tell shit jokes, one of the two.
Probably would have happened, but then the jokes became a bit more sweeping. For instance, your line that:
“Unless I’ve been completely misreading my Koran I think [dry humping]'s pretty much compulsory all year. Flagellation, so long as it’s with a rod no thiccker than your thumb is okay too, so long as she’s been a really naughty, naughty girl.”
Seems to have been the precursor to what I guess you’ve taken as self righteousness, when Angua said “wonders why the fuck she bothers sometimes”
Let’s see. Public message board, international readership of many creeds and colour. You want to make jokes like the above, but then get all snippy when people respond and tell them they should shut up. I’m finding it hard to square that with your complaints that your freedom of speech is being curbed?
In honesty, you seem to have a lot of anger about religion, and some if it just seems to be unwarranted. Anger at a Muslim for christian stances on birth control? Nope, don’t follow. General anger at religion because “the bodies of my friends that are subject to restrictions derived from collections of ancient myths” - well isn’t that a choice for your friends, as to what they believe?
I don’t care about Angua’s religious beliefs. She sounded like a pretentious git so I took a completely gratutitous shot at her. She “wonders why the fuck she bothers sometimes” in a Pit thread? If you don’t see that as an invite for deflation, then we’ll simply have to agree to disagee. Had it been GD or GQ, of course, the sentiment would be a bit more understandable.
Besides, she’s a Ph.D. Student and the best she can do is “fuck off” and “go fuck yourself” ? Makes me wonder why I bother.
Gordon Bennett - you really are thick aren’t you? I’m going to type this really slowly, maybe download a crayon font. Beliefs are made concrete in laws. Like abortion laws, like blasphemy laws, like decency laws, like laws on stem cell research.
That is so self-evident it should not need pointing out to anyone who feels intellectually qualified to enter into any sort of debate.
I mean - JFC backwards on a pogo stick! You really had to have that explained to you?
But I do see you’ve mustered the brain cells to see I’m angry about religion (I’m glad because I was getting worried I’d been a bit too subtle) when forced to make what should be a self-evident case. I’m angry about poverty, murderers and child molesters too - even those not shielded by the Catholic Church. And reallly I don’t care what flavour kool-aid someone is sucking down. Muslim, Catholic - it’s all poisonous.
And as Brian Eckers has pointed out - flouncing off in a “fucking” huff in a joke Pit thread is pretty much asking for it. If someone sticks their nose in, which they are welcome to do, they accept the consequences. Besides it seems it’s others rushing in to take offense on her behalf mostly.
Anyway, now we’ve established I’m angry about religion in general and you couldn’t recognise an argument if it was taped to the handle of a carelessly discarded rake I’m out of this thread.
“I don’t care about Angua’s religious beliefs” != “go revere something or other”
As stated above, her comment “wonders why the fuck she bothers sometimes” followed directly after a joke that Islam promotes wife beating. You think this is an invite for deflation?
Funny really. If I said that [race x] or [nationality y] or [supporters of team z] were all a bunch of dry humpers/wife beaters/whatever then I’m sure you’d agree I was asking for people to point out I was wrong at best, downright stupid more realistically. But you somehow think sweeping insults are alright if it’s down to people of a particular belief system?
I fucking love rows. Really I do. Big blazing arguments, highlighting just why someone is a cunt of the first order - right up my alley. Slagging of religious beliefs - nae worries… Khameini - what a fucking tool. Pope whichever it is now - definite arsehole tendencies. Rowan Williams - who the fuck does he think he’s kidding, arguing for liberal policies that his rulebook just do not support at all.
But the way this thread’s gone? Just sad. “titter, muslims can’t wank during ramadan” - actually quite amusing, in a Viz kind of way. “They beat their women” - ah, we’ve got down to Richard Littlejohn humour then, hardly a shining example of wit. And “go revere something, bet your phd is shit” - well really, that’s just a wank thing to say.
I was almost hoping that wasn’t what you were arguing.
Because as recently as this thread here you were stating how strongly you believed Britain should defend its values and beliefs, and not allow “one iota of tolerance to alien values”. And I agree with that, because I think national identity is a good thing, and that each country should be allowed to define it’s principles and values, and to hold them. Hell, I even respect France’s quite bizarre attempts to keep French sacrosanct. It’s an illogical prejudice that’s almost certainly doomed to fail in time, but hell they view it as part of their culture and identity, so good for them.
But now it seems you only hold that belief when it’s your values and beliefs a country wants to hold on to. It would appear that people’s morality is only valid when it coincides with yours. If people have a different stance on stem cell research, or abortion, then they’re an “irrational bastard”, parking their “religious tanks on [your] lawn”
As I said before, what a strangely angry little man you are. Quite a worringly prejudiced one too.
But don’t you understand : Tagos is from the UK, home of incredibly strong religious oppression.
I can imagine he feels anger when he is being acosted on all sides by all these religious people telling him what he can and can’t do.
What a fucking tool.
They’re also fine because they’re not “masturbation”. Its not just a question of “intent”. Before you get to intent, its a question of whether you are actually masturbating.
 Unfortunately, they didn’t teach us creative swearing. I wish they had done though, it’d make life a lot more fun.
Anyway, as much as I’d like to continue this discussion as to whether I can creatively insult people or not, I really can’t be bothered – its that student apathy kicking in.
Shit! They’re building a golden calf! You better go stop them! (Ever read the Old Testament? You couldn’t leave the Israelites alone for five minutes or they would start worshipping idols. What’s up with that?)
You really aren’t that good of a judge of character, then. I only really know Angua from her various other posts on Islam (and her particular branch of it) - if you’ve bothered to read them, she is hardly one to push her faith on others, and she gave a lot of interesting and clearly knowledgeable explanations about it. If you think that explaining something to others makes you a “pretentious git”, I’m guessing the SDMB is rather irritating for you. I personally appreciate the effort I’ve seen her get into to explain these things.
Little known fact: Angua is single-handedly responsible for all of those things! Let’s get her, boys!
Sigh. The idiocy of religion raises its ugly head again…
