It's that great getting up morning: The new site is nearly ready for you.

With accompaniment from Weird Al in 3-D!

Did somebody ask earlier if nested quotes work?

I just tried doing a nested quote. That is, I found a post that had a quote and tried to quote that entire post.

Did it work?

Why yes, it did!

Discourse has spoiler boxes too. You code them the same way as here.

Instead of hiding the text entirely, it is shown blurred. You click on it to read it.

Here is a link to a post I made with some text hidden in a spoiler box, assuming that you are able to view it without having to log in (or even if you do):

https://try.discourse.org/t/test3-widbiwd-whdoehf-heoehf-hefojef-hefojef-hedoejf/1378/10?u=senegoid

…and Smell-O-Vision!

BTW, I’m playing with some tags that GreysonCarlisle documented, above.

[noparse][details] stuff stuff stuff [/details]
produces totally hidden text with just a little triangle you click on to view it. That is most similar to our spoiler boxes. You cannot have other text outside the tags on the same line.

stuff stuff stuff

I have a huge problem with infinite scroll: It breaks searching within the page, a function that I use frequently.

The more I play around with discourse the more I hate it. I found one long thread, the “what happens if we have over a thousand posts one” and scrolling through it is indeed a nightmare. Infinite scrolling is the absolute worst thing to have ever been invented. It’s so frustrating.

A case for in-line photo/video posting:

I agree that in-line photo and video posting should not be ubiquitous throughout the SDMB. We don’t want this place turning into a one-trick dog and pony show of gee-wiz bells and whistles (that’s the domain of Reddit).

However, allowing pic & vid posting in a single SD forum does have merit. For one thing, it would attract a more hep clientele of cool cats…like me.

Benefits:
• More cat photos: you can never have too many pics of cats doing funny things, like scratching the eyes out of dogs. However, cat lovers are not often tech savvy and have trouble linking to off-site photo hosting sites. In-line posting makes it easy.
• Updated portrait gallery: There has been talk of updating the SDMB Portrait Gallery. Arnold Winkelried did a fine job with the original gallery, but it’s not fair to burden one person with maintaining a site like this. There is high demand for viewing photos of the most attractive SD members…like me. However, the most attractive people are not often tech savvy, and have trouble even turning on their computers. In-line posting makes it easy.
• A picture’s worth a thousand words: Perhaps **Colibri **would like to upload his sketch of a Ruby-throated Hummingbird eviscerating with malice a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Or, maybe Stranger on a Train would like to illustrate his point about faster-than-light intergalactic space travel with a Venn diagram. Rocket scientists are not often tech savvy, and may have trouble uploading .jpgs to Photobucket. In-line posting makes it easy.
• [del] You can never have too many images of furry porn…[/del]

Precautions:
• Too much bandwidth? Cap file size of images at 250kB; video at 5MB.
• Inappropriate or copyrighted material? Make it a bannable offense.

Sure, I can foresee potential pitfalls. For instance I’d expect many requests to post nude photographs of myself in various contortionist poses. But, I won’t do it. My moral standards are too high…and I have a genital wart I’m kind of embarrassed about.

But, in all seriousness, I believe having one test SD forum allowing in-line posting would be a good thing. If it fails, delete it. If it thrives, expand it with various sub-fora. I do believe in-line photos and videos would be fun, encourage creative production and maybe increase viewership/membership.

As I see it, people in favor of in-line graphic posting are progressive, forward-thinking, sexy individuals. People opposed to it are first cousins to sea cucumbers. Unbiased Poll: who’s in favor?

Yay on the move, but…

**I stay signed in here and can’t recall my password. **
SDMB: No problem! Enter the email address you used to set up the account!
**Since I haven’t used that email address in quite awhile, I forgot that password, too, so I can’t access that account **.
Old email site: No problem! Enter the cell phone number you used to set up that account!
I was forced to get a new cell phone number two years ago
*Old email site: OK, enter the last password you recall using for this email account. *
**There’s only been one. I can’t recall it. **

I think I’m screwed. :frowning:

It would allow, for example, a sort of caption game or contest that could turn out both witty and fun.

I bet if you messaged the mods they would be glad to help you out.

I’m very happy and relieved for this coming upgrade. Thank you to everyone involved!

I’m impressed that you could get things that fucked up in less than three years since you signed up here.

Do you use Chrome as your browser? If you do, Google’s spyware keeps track of your passwords for you, and there’s a way you can get a list of which sites you have passwords on, and what your username and password are on each one. (I can’t remember how right now, but if you asked in GQ, someone would probably tell you pretty quick.)

I mention this because I stay signed in all the time too - but once in awhile, my computer insists on rebooting to install some updates or whatever, and then I’m not signed into anything. And that’s when Google remembers my passwords for me, and I barely notice that for a moment there, I wasn’t signed in. But you really can’t stay signed in for years; your computer won’t let you.

You’re only temporarily screwed. We’ll fix it for you.

So does Firefox. Menu bar>Tools>Options>Privacy&Security>Saved Logins

Since the demo/sandbox threads are deleted every day, see this thread on the Discourse board for today.

I can vouch for this. She helped me get back in under similar circumstances about ten years ago. I just had to tell her my username and what email address I’d used before.

Many thanks, TubaDiva, for letting us know, and for your and the SDMB staff’s hard work on this. I tend to be allergic to change myself, but I’m also an optimist and hope it’s a change for the better. I know you’ll do all you can to make it so.

Couldn’t we send it to a farm upstate with big, grassy pastures to happily live out the rest of its days in peace, instead?

That’s the same place my parents told me they sent all my elderly pets! It’s great knowing such a place exists. I sent my parents there when they got old.

I am happy to see progress, especially as this morning I could not even access Straight Dope at all.

I will wait until after the move to make any comments about the new location. Need to kick the tires and take it for a test drive.

I expect it to be different. I expect to see a lot of the people here to show up there. And I expect there to be the new here.
