It's that great getting up morning: The new site is nearly ready for you.

Look at the rabbits, SDMB.

I’ve heard of that place. [spoiler]
There’s a great big turkey on my grandpa’s farm
Who thinks he’s very gay.
He spreads his tail into a great big fan
And struts around all day.
You can hear him gobble at the girls and boys,
'Cause he thinks he’s singing when he makes that noise.
But he’ll sing his song another way
Upon Thanksgiving Day!

A cruel, children’s song my mother used to sing… :frowning:
A partial explanation of why I am the way I am.

  1. Right now go here:

UserCP / Your Profile

Look at that page. You should see your email address.

If the address listed is your current email address you need do nothing more, you’re good to go when we get to the new site.

  1. If the address listed in your profile is not correct or you do not have access to it go here:

UserCP / Edit Your Details / Email & Password / Edit Email & Password

Yes, you need to enter your current password to use this page.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO CHANGE YOUR CURRENT PASSWORD AT THIS TIME.

If you do not know your current password go to step 3 below.

If your email address needs correcting fill in the boxes. You’ll be asked for your new email address twice. Make sure they are both exactly the same. Click “Save Changes.”

You should receive a confirmation email at your new address within a few minutes. It may be in your inbox. It may be in your spam folder/trash. Look for it.

When you see it, open the email, click the url inside it, and you should be all set.

This is important: You will not be able to make posts until you receive that confirmation email and click on the url inside it.

  1. If none of this works, or you don’t remember your password, send me an email. TUBADIVA@AOL.COM

Or contact me on Facebook: Jennifer Paradis, Tuba-American

Explain what you need. I’ll look at it and we’ll get you straightened out.

You will see this message again. You will see this message a lot in the next week. Please tell your friends to go check their email addresses.

Thanks.

Why not? It’s what we do with retired moderators.

And they all lived happily ever after.

So I’ve been considering changing my username. Should I request it now or wait until after the move?

Kewl, @GreysonCarlisle !

Now, whereas your tutorial will only last for the day, and, whereas, I don’t have a printer, I will need to get busy today and take careful notes. Just like being back in school again! (Of course, I had to create my account there all over again, and I lost all the badges I accumulated yesterday too.)

Hey, let me try posting my video of me having my fun! I’m a YouTube star too, doncha know? (Approx. 30 minutes.) Yeah, that’s me in the floppy hat.

My post there.

Check it out!

I don’t recommend just rearranging the letters. El Nazi doesn’t have a nice ring.

Yeah, Le Nazi is fancier. French you know…

Awwww…!

Some issues we’re going to run into.

First is the new user posting restriction. Except for mods and admin, every new user–regardless of Trust Level–is restricted for 24 hours (and 3 seconds!) from making too many posts. This includes PMs. That’s 24 hours from your first post, not from account creation. There doesn’t seem to be any way to turn that off or for admin to clear it for any individual user or group. So make your first post as soon as you’re able, and don’t expect unfettered posting for a full day (and 3 seconds!) afterward.

Second is the blue bar. It shows up above your avatar. It’s really just the notifications bubble that tells you how many notifications you have. It can look like a blue bar, but it’s actually just that empty bubble. Or it can fill up with numbers (it seems to prefer 1 and 2, so it might tell you that you have 121212121212121212 notifications, but it can be any number). It’s a known bug in Discourse, and there’s no way to stop it from happening. If it appears as a blue bar, ignore it. If it’s full of numbers, dismiss your notifications, and that’ll clear it (often turning it into a blue bar).

Third is in the Discobot basic tutorial. There is a spot where it sometimes gets stuck. Just reply with the word skip, and it should straighten out. To even start the tutorial, you have to bookmark the PM. To do that, you have to click the three dots below the post to expand the toolbar so that it includes the bookmark icon.

Fourth is a problem with some badges. Typically, when you want to see what badges a poster has earned, it’ll show the badge, the time and date, and a link to the post that earned the badge. But sometimes, that badge was earned in a PM. Now, you can’t actually follow the link to read the PM, but you can see the title. So it might show something like “Earned Good Reply on June 30th in the So I fucked a prostitute yesterday. Should I tell my wife? thread.” It’s something to keep an eye on.

Fifth is Internet Explorer. Users with that browser will have problems. Site likely won’t even load. For users of older versions of Chrome, every update seems to either break it or fix it again.

And speaking of updates, Discourse updates frequently. Afterward, the site will be slower and more laggy than usual for a few hours. Nothing to be done about it. Just know that it doesn’t herald the return of our current timeouts.

Badges? We don’t need no stinking badges!

My thinking, as well. But kids and soccer moms eat that shit up.

Will we be able to hide individual threads? I want to do this because often thread titles here activate earworms for me. Right now it is the damn “blinded by the light” thread in CS. Every time I see the title…

Yup. Threads and whole forums, both.

There are several different settings. You can set to Watching, Watching First Post, Tracking, Normal, or Muted. Each works in a different way. I use Watching for important threads, Normal for run-of-the-mill stuff I don’t hate, and Muted for everything I do hate.

That would be awesome. And I wan’t it for the exact same reason.
I used to like “BBTL” but the Straight Dope ruined it for me. lol

Then when will you get to exercise self-control??

“wan’t” ?!?

*Really? *Spellcheck is your friend!

I learned (from a conversation with GreysonCarlisle on the demo site) there’s an easier way to quote a post. You don’t have to highlight the some or all of the post first. Just click in the Reply button at the bottom of the post.

When the editor window opens (they call it the “composer” window) the toolbar includes an icon that look like a speech bubble – it’s the first one. Click on that, and the entire post you are replying to gets imported, in the form of a quote, into the post you are composing.

(ETA: And if that post, in turn, contains a quote? I didn’t try that. I did ascertain, however , that you can have nested quotes.)

It will nest all the quotes. Which is why we really, really, really need to continue our current practice of quoting exactly what we’re responding to. If you just use the reply button, your readers will have the option of viewing the quoted post, but it also includes all the previous posts, so we’ll have to wade through that.

You get badges for all kinds of silly little things. The first time you quote another post you get a badge that says you know how to do quotes. The first time you mention another user with the @user construct, you get a badge that says you know how to do that.

If you work through the discobot tutorial, you’ll have several badges by the time you finish.

You get a badge if you can tie your shoes. You get a badge as soon as you learn to walk upright on your hind legs. You get a badge the first time you go to the bathroom by yourself.

You may be able to sell your badges out on the street corner for drug money.
