It's that great getting up morning: The new site is nearly ready for you.

That would be the time between noon and midnight.

Okay, I put in my current PW (don’t want to change it), and I attempted to change my email address (a yahoo address that I use for-- no offense-- junk mail) to my main email address and I got this message:

It’s not absolutely essential that I change the address, and the administrators have enough on y’all’s plates right now. I can keep using the yahoo address. But I’m curious-- my main email is an unfamiliar domain that some organizations refuse to recognize. Does the Dope have a roster of “banned” domains?

Yes, they have a roster of banned mail domains. She said exactly that in an earlier response to you.

About changing your e-mail: Okay, I did that. It doesn’t happen quite as cleanly as it ought. I got a message that appeared on my screen for about 5 seconds and disappeared. I only got to read it as far as:

and then I found I was locked out of my User CP. (I could still log in, but I couldn’t do much.)

I was able to guess quickly enough that it sent me a confirmation e-mail that I would have to respond to.

But damn – Any software that displays important messages just briefly and then erases them (and I’ve seen plenty!) needs to be burned with fire, and the programmers who coded that along with.

Yes, we do. Send me a PM with the domain name and I’ll check to see if it’s on our list.

Now to an urgent question: How does this new site work with cookies, JavaScript, encryption, and a wide variety of browsers of various vintages?

Last time this board updated anything, my browser wouldn’t work with it (you updated your encryption algorithm and my older browser didn’t understand that). I had an older computer that could not be updated to a newer operating system, and could not update to a newer browser because it wouldn’t work with the older system. The result: I got locked out of The Straight Dope Message Board for several years until I got a literal physical new(er) computer.

And even this new(er) computer with its new(er) browser doesn’t do a lot of web sites right.

And no two browsers seem to implement JavaScript quite the same way, besides which I prefer to keep JavaScript disabled except when I really need it.

I also am in the habit of clearing all cookies rather regularly.

How is all this going to play? In my past experiences, various web site upgrades have NEVER worked better with my existing browser(s), and more often have worked worse or not at all. As much as this new site change looks exciting and worthwhile, I will be surprised if it works for everybody with older browsers. I will not be surprised if I get locked out again until I can GoFundMe enough money for a whole new computer.

TBH, I like it better without pictures. They just add too much clutter.

But if your only real objection was the profusion of goatse, you could just decree that to be an instabannable offense. Then all the drive-by trolls could only do it once each, at the most. Or was even that getting to be too much?

Wow, awesome! I’ve not used discourse much - this will be quite a change. So glad to hear that the owners (whoever that is nowadays) are continuing to invest in the site.

Hopefully this is the first step in spending some effort on attracting new users?

Well, that didn’t take long. Upon going to the demo site linked in the OP, I see:

Okay, I’ve got a version of Firefox on this mochine also that is known to work for a lot of sites that Safari won’t work with, although I’d rather not go there because reasons.

Okay, with my Firefox browser I’m able at least to open the “about” page and read it. These remarks immediately make me nervous:

Discourse is designed for the next 10 years of the Internet, so the minimum browser requirements are high.

Discourse supports the latest, stable releases of all major browsers and platforms:
[ul][li] Microsoft Edge[/li][li] Google Chrome[/li][li] Mozilla Firefox[/li][li] Apple Safari[/ul][/li][/quote]

and:

I don’t want a site that is designed only for the next 10 years. I want a site that is also designed for the last 10 years. That is, one that can work with the widest variety of existing browsers already out there, mine included, and will continue to do so. (The Straight Dope Message Board has already failed that test for me.)

And any site that uses a lot of JavaScript — the more extensive and more sophisticated, the worse — it bound to have piles of quirks, or worse, that will be different on every client platform out there. That’s been my invariable experience, and one of the reasons I really don’t like to run JavaScript.

I haven’t tried playing with the discourse demo site yet. I’ll get back to that Real Soon Now.

Fair enough. I’ll explore that and I promise not to complain.

I can just keep the yahoo address. No prob. I told you I was speshul.

I agree. I’ve gotten used to using imgur links.

WHOA! Eyebleacheyebleach! Didn’t need to know that. But now I can’t un-know it.

When I first tried to sign up for the Dope, I tried using a fastmail address. The site wouldn’t take it. I didn’t know whether for some reason fastmail was banned (though as far as I know they’re a respectable site), or whether the problem was that they’re based in Australia and I’m in the USA and the site thought there was something suspicious about that.

The address from my ISP went through with no problem.

For some reason I feel like Morgan Freeman is telling methere’s a comet on a collision course with Earth, but not to worry because we have a plan.

If I remember right there are a few posters who rely on public libraries, etc, for their internet access, and who haven’t been able to log on since the COVID-19 thing started. ( Annie X-mas, I think?). Won’t they be surprised the first time they try to log back on to the boards?

Anyone know how conversations on discourse servers are affected if I use a different user name on a discourse chat group than I do for the SDMB.

I admit, I’m an idiot when it comes to this types of things.

Is there a way to send out an email notice to every poster?

I am guessing here, but I think you’re talking about conversations on Discord.
