It's that great getting up morning: The new site is nearly ready for you.

Send a PM to a mod with all your sock accounts and we will make sure to take care of it.

We would love to be able to allow pictures. (I have a very lovely cat myself, as don’t we all.)

However, after one too many times of opening a thread and finding “goatse,” it was decided this was why we could not have nice things.

We deeply regret the actions of posters that cause us to be this way.

This is great news! Of course, there will be drama, but I hope it’s manageable. Looking forward to next week!

Will private messages be ported over?

erm i m slow but i see no option to do anything with ones e-mail

From what testing I’ve done, Discourse supports both vBulletin-style tags and their own style. For instance, you can bold something by typing either bold or bold. The new format might be a bit easier to use, but if (like me) you’re used to the old format and don’t want to change, you can do that, too.

Go to UserCP (“control panel”) at the top left of this page. Scroll down to “Settings & Options,” “Edit email and password.” Be advised that if you change your email, you will be asked to change your password, too.

Oh, and strictly speaking, it is one of the rules of the board that members keep their e-mail addresses up-to-date at all times. So if you don’t have a current e-mail in there, that’s on you.

Obviously we don’t always enforce this, but it does decrease my sympathy for those who will get locked out.

It’s this link: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/profile.php?do=editpassword

To get to it, follow the links: User CP –> Edit Email & Password
The screen that comes up has fields for both changing your password and changing your email. You don’t have to change your password. You can leave those fields blank, although you will have to fill out the “Enter your present password to continue:” field at the top.

I’m glad this is happening and to be honest, I wasn’t expecting anything for months more, so this is relatively quick. The 502/504 errors have been really annoying so I’ll be glad to be rid of them.

My sock accounts are:

 • Loach
 • TubaDiva
 • Miller

Please take care of these for me. What’s a PM?

You do not have to change your password, in order to change your email.

You just have to enter your password at the top of the box where you put the new email.

Be sure to check your email for the confirmation link once you change your email.

Form the Discourse site:

So it automatically brings back banned posters. There’s hope for Satan yet.

Hopefully Aldebaran and Jersey Diamond will be included, too

Yes. Mine ported over on the test system without any problems that I saw (I did not check every pm).

As John Krasinski might say, that’s some good news.

Another improvement is that, when we issue a warning, the poster will receive a mild but memorable electric shock through their keyboard.

Hey, some of us might enjoy that.

User CP / Edit Your Details / Edit Your Email and Password.

You can change one of the other but not both at once.

If you change your email or your password you should receive a confirmation email, just like when you first signed up to the board. However, that confirmation email may wind up in your spam filter. Please look for it, open it up, and trigger the url inside it. You won’t be able to use your account until you do.

Hope this helps.

Jenny

That’s very good news. I’m always the one to defend this board against all naysayers, but the functionality of this site really got worse and worse over the last months. And I’m glad that the powers that be are still willing to invest in this board, which gives me warm snuggly feelings.

One caveat: I’m an IT guy, and I know how painful these transformations can be. There ARE times when almost everything goes smoothly, but generally you have to follow Murphy’s law, so not everything will work right from day one. There a gazillion things to consider in such an action, so dopers, be prepared that the board will act a bit wonky after the migration, and be patient. It’ll work all out in the end, I’m sure of that because I trust the staff.

Thanks for this–I did change my email and was puzzled as to why I couldn’t post. Verification takes just a couple of seconds. Now I’m back to the thread I’d been looking at, hoping I won’t be seeing ads (I’ve been a member continuously for a while, am still a member, and am not used to seeing those ads!)
