Opinions shaped and formed by voters locked in their social media bubbles, forming their opinions based only on memes forwarded to them by like minded partisans (and likely created by Russian trolls and/or Republican media shills)
The trouble is, when the morons compose 30% of the electorate. Then we’re in deep shit.
Right. It means we have to convince 71.6% of the non-morons to vote against them to get a majority.
Facts are irrelevant as it relates to voters opinions. It is their perception and how that drives them to vote on election day. Biden has a significant hill to climb to win this upcoming election.

I worry about this.
ISTM this is what got Clinton. She would tout how great everything is but there were loads of people who weren’t feeling it.
Sure, Biden can point to a stock market that is doing great and growth rates and unemployment rates and say things are better than ever.
But that is not the experience of most people out there who cannot buy a house, inflation is painful, retirement is scary and so on. They are not feeling this economic surge and are often feeling further behind than ever.
And I think that is what Trump tapped in to. Clinton wanted to tell everyone it’s all good but they were not feeling it at all. Ignoring that gives Trump an edge.
FTR: I despise Trump. I already know I am voting for Biden without a doubt.
Here in Canada, I am reliably assured that the post-covid inflation is all Trudeau’s fault. I assume he caused yours as well. He also made my car brakes wear out faster.
Our Conservative party are going to be riding that hobbyhorse into the next Canadian election.
Well it’s worse than that. In some polling, close to 50% of people believe statements like “Unemployment is at a record high” (cite)
A lot of people in the US are misinformed, morons or not. The RW media aggressively lies and the LW tries to be softly-softly and spend a lot of time acknowledging how big a problem inflation is.
The result is, even independents, or those who aren’t political, see very negative news about the economy in aggregate.
I’d like to see this kind of stuff re-polled. It’s been over a month now, and it’s not right that too many (mainstream!) media outlets lock this in stone like it’s some forever truth.
Personally, I wouldn’t see that as very significant.
Because firstly, this poll and others demonstrate that people have believed absolute falsehoods about the economy for months or years. And most recent polls (e.g. from May), show less than a quarter of Americans believe that the economy is “good” or better.
So if the number of people believing a specific falsehood, like unemployment being at a record high has gone down…that would be nice, I guess, but the big picture remains the same.
My concern is that’s it’s self-fulfilling: The economy is bad because “people think” the economy is bad because “everyone says” the economy is bad …
And yes, I know there are some legitimate considerations underpinning the bad vibes for some portion of the population. Not trying to say that people who are truly hurting aren’t hurting.
Ah, yes I agree with that. It is self-perpetuating at this point.
That’s why I have (slim) hopes for this debate. Biden doesn’t need to sell the idea that the economy is doing well…he only needs to get people to ask the question again: *Is* the economy doing badly?
