It's the Great Minirants, Charlie Brown! (October minirants)

More often with a sneeze.

Who the hell lets a black cat out on a dark night anytime? I hope kitty is hiding somewhere until the rain dries up instead being roadkill.

I am going to cut a digit off with a dull knife someday and it will be all MY fault for being too lazy to sharpen it. I was cutting veggies up with a dull knife so pressing harder than I should have needed to, when I let my left thumb wander stupidly under the very sharp tip. As I watched it slice a third of the way through my thumbnail and tip of my thumb all I could do was to say some very bad words at myself because it was ALL my fault.

In the before times, I would have gone to an urgent care clinic for a few stitches. I keep bleeding through the bandages and I don’t even use my left thumb while typing.

Fingernails. Nature’s safety bumpers for your fingertips.

Not sure how “mini” this is - I don’t know how to feel about all this.
But I came here to bitch to y’all that the dispensary where I work not only dropped our weekly “penny product” for employees, but also axed everyone’s hours. I went from “4-on/3-off” to “3-on/4-off”… a loss of ten work hours each week, and others got it worse.

We also STILL don’t have health insurance, despite being told “soon!” when I was hired back in May.
No flu shot, either. When I asked about that, my fucking old-man Boomer manager told me, “They’re free!” Well, yeah … if you got health insurance, mofo.

The cut-to-the-bone staffing means two people opening, and two closing. Nobody’s got health care, everyone now has a grudge against management … what happens if (ha! when) someone calls out sick? Or “sick” ? One sole worker running the entire shitshow alone? How’s that gonna go?
… and how bad will morale get that day?

It’s like nobody thought about those questions.

The penny product (exactly that: a “free” item each week - sometimes our choice, sometimes a specific product) was a nice perk, and was a true morale booster.

It also allowed us all to speak knowledgeably about products that, quite frankly, we wouldn’t spend a dime on personally. Seventy, eighty bucks, just to know more about a product you sell, no commission, that you may not even like or want? Ain’t happenin’ bub.

But there’s a lot I can sell comfortably and with authority now that I would never know a goddamn thing about.
Plus a couple of specific items that I like. Now. But I didn’t know I would, and would not have bought for myself and would never have known how awesome “X” is.

And they’ve thrown all that away.

Penny wise/pound foolish.

I’m off 3 days straight, so we’ll see what kind of dumpster fire this has all ignited once I wander back in mid-week.

Have you looked into state medical plans, purplehorseshoe? With your cut in pay, and the COVID inspired raised income limits its very possible you are eligible. Being without health insurance is scary at any time, I can’t imagine how it feels new.

So, yesterday it got dark and cloudy and temp dropped to 72F and I got all hopeful that we would finally get some rain. Nothing.

Today, the clouds are blowing in and its cold and windy and I am NOT getting my hopes up again.

I hate when people act as if they know what they are talking about when spouting off things that are untrue.

Even small things piss me off.

Context? Just so I know who/what you’re hating.

Me too!!

Details, so we can “omg totally!” at whatever you got.

SO a childhood friend has devolved into a rightwing nut job, posing as pseudo christian who sends up prayer hands at every mention of the orange menace while she engages in biden bashing and sends me gif’s with racist and misogynist overtones claiming it’s only in fun and I should get a kick out of this one. Damn Girl you need a kick in the head and soon. I’d block her but I want to keep an close eye on this one, what the hells is the drinking water in Palm Beach anyway bath salts?

I’ll try to keep this “mini”: Fuck 2020.

About two weeks ago, took my son to the walk-in clinic, head cold, sinus congestion, no problem, give it time it’ll go away. About 10 days ago, daughter didn’t feel well, came home from school early even (yes, we are back to in-person schooling in Trumpistan) which is very, very abnormal for her. Figured she got the same bug as brother, just hit her harder. She ended up missing the next four days of school, again, very much a sign she wasn’t feeling well, because I could have sworn she’d still go to school if her arm fell off. Finally, though, she did say she was feeling a bit better on Wednesday…
Then I heard her throwing up around midnight, and come 9:00 Thursday morning, said things were way worse and it was time to go see the doctor. No argument from me, get dressed, let’s go!

We went to the walk-in clinic, and during triage check-in, they said… You look awful, and this is probably more serious than we are equipped for, and moved us to the ER, where, during ER check-in, I notice she is turning distinctly yellow. Move to room, blood tests, CT, x-ray…

Her appendix had burst, at some point. Blood tests show definite sepsis. Abnormally high bilirubin, obviously, but no associated abscess around appendix or on liver to explain the bilirubin counts. Local hospital has no liver specialist, we need to get somewhere that does… In the middle of a near-blizzard.

Flight crews available, weather allows only one clear path, northwest to Billings, Montana. Off we go on an airplane, me just barely dressed enough to qualify for an emergency run to the doctor originally. Arrive in Billings at 3:30 pm, more blood tests, history for new team, decision made to do targeted contrast MRI to figure out the liver issue. MRI finds complete thrombosis/clot in the vein that drains the large intestine, and another thrombosis in the portal vein of the liver. Too many worries about complications, so the decision is made to get us somewhere else, and the weather has cleared enough to go south, so Denver it is! By 2:30 am, we are in the air again, landing in Denver around 4, and then an ambulance ride to Children’s Hospital. And here I have been, ever since.

Progress has been made, sepsis agent identified (e. coli), clots have not changed at all. Enough secondary flow around them that we are just going with medical management. At first IV heparin, but they were unable to reach therapeutic levels, so now lovenox. Hasn’t shifted yet, but her infection is responding well to IV antibiotics, and it is now waiting for everything to finally tip the right way. I’m exhausted, she’s exhausted, but things are at least slowly improving.

I may need to have my clothes surgically removed by the time it’s all said and done though…

That certainly is NOT mini! Prayers for you, her, her doctors and everyone involved!

If you have family close to your home, maybe they could have some clean clothes shipped to you. I’m very glad you were able to stay with her in the hospital, for a long time there was a very strict NO visitors rule.

Holy crap! Are you okay for necessities while you’re in Denver? I understand that there’s a Ronald McDonald House in the area, and suggest you look into it. Also, feel free to PM me if there’s anything I can do for a fellow Doper.

Thanks!

I’m an extremely simple person. The food here is perfectly edible, and I was able to buy a charger for my phone, so I have the Dope to keep me sane, otherwise I’m just sleeping bedside until things get better! But I appreciate knowing I have a lifeline in the area should I need something, since my closest family/friends are 300+ miles away.

Just to be clear, I’m not in the area (unless you were referring to Ronald McDonald House). I could Venmo you a few bucks for a clean set of underwear, though, that sort of thing.

Clarification appreciated as much as the offer (everything is a bit fuzzy!). So far, I’m alright. It’s amazing how COVID has messed up some of the strangest things. The gift shop here is apparently on pretty reduced hours, or I’d at least buy a souvenir shirt to change into!

Tomorrow I plan to order some essentials for delivery from Walmart or some other place that can get it to me same-day.

Its not the outer clothes that would be bothering me nearly as much as the unmentionables.

When you make your order, remember soap/shampoo/etc. Hospital stuff isn’t very nice, but is VERY expensive.

More prayers on the way!

@Kron, that is definitely not mini. I am glad they were able to get her to a place that can treat her, and even gladder that, in these days of COVID, they’re letting you stay with her. I am sure it’ll help her healing to know you’re close by.

Second the suggestion that you pay attention to the underwear, too. If you have an extra shirt and extra brief, you can always wash one set out in the sink …

Best of luck to the daughter, and I hope the son has gotten better, too.

If you let the nursing staff know you could use a shower, they should find you one. Ask for toiletries and they’ll load you up.

I’m from a long line of overly helpful medical staff… I’m tempted to tell you to ask about undies and t-shirt, too. My sister would be immediately getting you everything you needed, including a pair of scrubs… for while she was washing your clothes.

Healing vibes going out! Let us know updates.

There is absolutely no way to spin that into “mini”.
That’s not even the polar opposite of mini.
Maybe opposing solar orbit is somewhere in the ballpark.

Holy smokes! This deserves its own thread so it doesn’t get buried in minirants. Keep us posted! Fingers crossed!

I see that other kind Dopers have checked in with your needs (dude - new undies will make you feel better, I promise) so I just want to spare a thought for your girl, who must feel like absolute dogshit throughout this ordeal.

Please start a thread. I did the same when my Other Shoe was first hospitalized - it was rapidly not so mini - and it was hugely comforting to have somewhere to dump each day’s mental crap … plus the medical Dopers (and there’s a surprising amount) all piled in to explain the medical stuff I found myself inundated with on the daily.

ETA: tell a kind looking nurse what’s going on. They will find you a shower and stuff, I swear to God most nurses are amazing.
