Well, regarding vindication, SA did announce that he would show this thread to people who asked why (in other threads) posters were making references to paper-tube fucking and whatnot, presumably to show the newcomer that he was right and the people making the reference were wrong.
I admit some curiosity about the reaction of someone unfamiliar with this thread (and hopefully of no strong opinion about the scandal). I’m inclined to doubt it will generate the understanding and sympathy SA is expecting.
Let’s get real here, mmkay? About fifteen or twenty people are telling me I’m wrong, many of whom are longstanding opponents such as yourself to begin with whose ire is politically based.
But that notwithstanding, the difference is the same as if you twenty people were to swear that if I were to hold an apple in my hand and release it, it would fly up and hit the ceiling. Whereupon I disagreed, released it, and it fell to the floor. That would be an argument I would have won despite having an overwhelming number of others in disagreement.
I, for one, would vote that this thread not be closed. If it dies a natural death, sure, let it go, but I think there are still civil cases and the like pending, so it would be good to just have one place for any Pit-style commentary on those. Plus we need somewhere to point noobs to in ten years time, when they ask why we’re making jokes about fucking cardboard tubes (and we will be, oh yes!) and I know that people will want to comment on the lunacy then.

Well, the Paterno example is still useful to demonstrate that:
institutional cover-ups and willful blindness to misdeeds still happen.
even if you are otherwise successful and popular, as Paterno was, this can still hurt you.
if you’re successful and popular enough, some people will still defend you, even to ridiculous lengths.
Personally, I’m hoping that the Penn State example will lead to reported problems being investigated early and quietly, rather that having authorities close their eyes and hope for the best, leading to years of further problems and an eventual catastrophe. Human nature being what it is, though, Paterno won’t be the last of his kind.
