Funny thing is, by that standard Curley and Schultz deserve consideration if they only heard Paterno’s account of what McQueary said, i.e. they only got hearsay.
Of course, the onus on them (and Paterno) is to talk to McQueary directly and at length, to establish that what he saw indeed comprised assault on a child, and then quickly alert police and direct McQueary to give his report to them.
Anyway, distractions aside, my invitation to NoLittlePlans to name three or four of Starving Artist’s most reasonable arguments remains.
Anyone who claims “Paterno had nothing to do” with any one particular decision that involved his staff or his program is fucking nuts. The AD was not his superior in any way, shape, or form. He couldn’t even fire Paterno when he wanted.
After exchanging a half-dozen emails with NCAA Executive Committee Chairman Ed Ray, you might be surprised to know the unprecedented penalties imposed upon Penn State football were, amazingly, self-inflicted by Penn State leadership and executed by the NCAA under the terms of the agreement set forth in the consent decree signed behind closed doors by Rodney Erickson and Mark Emmert.
The implications of the arrangements described above should be the real focus of this 100-page thread and rank among the many red flags contributing to a second look and change of heart by Bob Costas and a growing number of others who are stopping to say “something’s not right” every single day.
Do you trust this particular jury to ascertain facts based on testimony received many years after a particular incident occurred? Do you think character testimony is useful in determining a verdict?
Reactionary has a particular meaning, namely “opposing political or social liberalisation or reform”. It’s a bit deceptive due to this highly specific usage and I’ve been caught out when using it before. I didn’t assume it meant unthinking reaction, but I described one of Hugo Chavez’ policies as reactionary merely because it was illiberal, when in fact I should have used the term “authoritarian”.
Do you think that the trial jury proceeded dispassionately? Do you disagree with their conclusions in regards to any of the other charges?
I have a feeling that there are two possibilities here. The first is that SA is blinded by ideology and feels compelled to defend a conservative, as iconoclasm is harmful to the movement. One can become so partisan as to not notice one’s own actions are totally distorting the intention of a movement’s founders and actually repelling people otherwise sympathetic to the movement. All that matters is WINNING!!!. The second possibility is honey badger doesn’t really give a fuck, he’s just going to goad us into actually posting a video of one of us dry humping a paper towel tube, then posting about how he convinced the “smartest liberals” in the room to utterly demean themselves on Free Republic or 4chan or something.
I have a feeling DrJC is not, in fact, a pseudonym for Emile Zola.
Bryan, sure, just give me a chance to address your request when I have time and access to a computer that allows me to easily navigate back through previous dialogue. Stuck on my mobile device right now, but, paper towel tube theory aside (for which I have no opinion), I find myself consistently surprised by how spot-on he’s been about so many things relating to this case. I don’t agree with him about everything (perhaps the existence of victim #2), but 90% of what I read from him, I can almost picture him wearing a special set of “truth glasses.”
Justice will be served in due time, but I’m not worried about that. My interest right now is with the Penn State community that is motivated and committed to the idea of emerging from all this wreckage with something of value to share with society. If we’re ever going to tackle the issue of child sexual abuse in this country, this is by far the best chance to do something about it. Words and intentions get lost in the wind, so I’m talking about individually taking immediate action. I’m talking brainstorming with local alumni chapters, which we’ve done to organize campaigns to volunteer with child safety advocacy centers and mentorship programs (I was assigned to a 5th grader named Henry from Ecuador). I’m talking about raising funds and making personal donations to support these groups (the bulk of my donations went to RAINN, which I would later regret when they said the Penn State “culture” was complicit in Jerry’s abuse of children in their rush to judgment). THON is a great childcare advocasy alternative to send donations. Simply walking into your local alderman’s office and starting a conversation about what we can do as a community to address this issue is a start. The university is also accepting donations to build a facility and national conference center for the specific purpose of being a global leader in the fight against child sex abuse.
For a long time, I was completely consumed by everything that’s transpired since November, 2011. Thankfully, I’ve since achieved peace with everything and I feel pretty good about the way it’ll all play out. Many others are starting to feel the same, and we can finally let go a little bit and redirect our attention and efforts to moving forward and using this stage as an opportunity to maximize a meaningful impact.
Yeah… I’m not going to be paying much attention to your posts until you cite some of these “reasonable” and “spot-on” observations of Starving Artist’s. Your impressions of what comprises “justice”, let alone what historical situations you feel are analogous to Paterno and Penn are of no interest to me. You’ve now said at least twice that Starving Artist has made some good points, and this is the fourth time I’ve asked you to name some of them.
The motivation to bring you enlightenment was driven by no sense of obligation, but rather the small token of personal satisfaction. You have effectively eliminated that motivation, so your opinion is no longer of consequence to me. BTW, it is amazing to me that you can form such strong opinions without even a basic grasp of the subject in question. Some might call it ignorance, and I’d be inclined to agree.
