Maybe Atilla was protesting the lack of cat ornaments?
I’ve done the ancestry thing and it pretty much backed up other research. Be prepared for surprise NPEs (non-parental event). Those can either create or answer questions.
You have my sympathies with the water heater flyboy. The water heaters in my last four addresses (including this one) have been replaced: twice because of a leak like yours, once to upgrade to a tankless (I loved that thing!) and the one in this apartment, because it quit heating.
I hope that your plumbing woes get solved soonest and not too dearly metal mouse.
Irked, came home, walked Nelson (he got to meet Linc again) and et. Not much shakin’ at CasaRoja.
Evening all. Swimming and sauna were completed as scheduled, dinner is assimilating inside me and the garbage is out at the curb, so it has been a good afternoon. Down to 41F now, so indoor slothage is on the agenda for the remainder of the night. Have shut the water off for the evening, so need to make sure I only use one bathroom tonight and reserve the other one for Thorsday morning.
flyboy, glad the work got done quickly and to you and wifey’s satisfaction, and given the stress of the day I think three slices were appropriate…
Pilot, of course I know you meant exciting, but considering the subject of 400 bathrooms, I’m sure something was exiting somewhere every day…
shoe, haven’t had to return anything via Amazon yet, interesting how it works out.
Dicey, enjoy tomorrrow (which it already is as I type this in your neck of the planet). and your comment “there’s not much better Mexican in Switzerland.” reminded me of once visiting the old city of Delft in The Netherlands and on the square with the old chruch and houses…was a Mexican restaurant. I guess they are everywhere.
VanGo, I’m usually in favor of sports fields for kids, but sounds like there is good and sound reasons to vote no. Hope it works out, sounds like most of your citizens wanted their opinions known on it.
OK, need to…actually, don’t have a damn thing that needs doing right now, so I am going to sit here and sloth for awhile. Have a good evening all.
I have mixed feelings about geneology in general and DNA testing in particular. On the one hand, if you’re into that sort of thing it can be an interesting hobby. You may uncover some “huh, that’s neat” sort of tidbits.
On the other hand, I doubt many of those tidbits are worth spending lots of money to learn. And no matter what I happen to know about my family tree, it ultimately has no bearing whatsoever on the person I am, have been, and will be.
I tried to post this earlier, and it wouldn’t post. I also lost some of it. Maybe Discourse had indigestion.
I have nothing interesting to report. I’m almost done deep-cleaning the kitchen floor. I use a polish on it because without it, the floor looks like vinyl, which it is, but with the polish, it looks a little more like wood. I need to apply the shine, but I have a grocery order coming, and I don’t want to step on a just-waxed floor.
See? Dullsville.
I was doing some genealogy stuff earlier today. On my dad’s side, I know stories that go back several generations. On Mom’s side, I know almost nothing farther back than her grandparents. I did discover that my great-great-great-grandmother was named Grazie. I kind of hope she had a brother named Prego. (“You’re welcome.”) Yes, some company named a spaghetti sauce “You’re welcome.”
I’m a little bummed about my knee. It’s so warm, you can feel the heat through my clothing, but mostly, it’s that huge lump that’s frustrating. Somehow despite the exercises I do daily, I lost some flexion. The therapist tortured me a little while, and I got back to where I was with a minimum of whimpering.
Taters, those pups sure have to pee a lot! Is Buster still leery of the rain, or has he gotten used to it? We’re saturated here, too. I read that the coast got even more rain than we did. But the sun is supposed to come out on Friday, so maybe things will dry a bit before Saturday’s onslaught.
Hmmm. Is it called “Corral de oro”?
Oh! That’s so cute!
flyboy, you’re not supposed to have plumbing issues the same time as MetalMouse. Wait your turn! Seriously, I’m sorry you’re going to have to get a new water heater. Was anything damaged from the water?
Take it up with boofae! She’s the one who made this the ‘wet & wild’ thread!
Like I said, the water heater must have just sprung a leak when I went back there. If it had happened yesterday, Wifey, RN would have been visiting patients and I would have been in Burien. Got lucky(-ish) for once.
I napped. I had a martini. Off to stand on a platform and heave for 8 hours. And await the inevitable double helping of Murphy.
Spot either had a dingleberry or kicked a nugget out of the litterbox, then proceeded to try to cover it. Resulting in a skid mark I had to clean up. It is a good question why we tolerate pets and babies when they do nothing but scream, eat all the food and shit on the floor, but if @LSLGuy did it, I’d be pulling out the shotgun.
A fine evening here. Her Ladyship returned timely after my last post, we eventually ate leftovers for dinner and declared the remaining hi-carb T-day leftovers too old for her delicate constitution and too carby for my decrepit pancreas. So what hadn’t been eaten was trashed and suddenly the fridge is an open panorama.
After the we walked to the dance place for an evening group event: beginning Salsa. We had done that at a nightclub a few weeks ago, to my great frustration which annoyance was what actually triggered us getting off the dime about real paid-for sustained lessons. I also spent an hour with a salsa video tonight to refresh my memory before we went.
Salsa is super popular here in Latino-Carib-land, but is not the easiest to learn. So time to knuckle down.
As I mentioned, tonight is our city’s holiday parade which essentially cuts the city into two halves with the main drag closure to run the parade. No problem for us walking to the dance, but major problem for most of their other customers. So we were the only couple to show and got a free private salsa lesson. Yaay us! I was clumsy and Her Ladyship was distractingly hot and deliciously liquidly curvaceous. As always. Despite not being Latino.
I’m not sure my efforts with the vid helped or hurt. It was not a matter of the two sources teaching differently, rather that my poor raggedy-assed brain can only take so much thinking about this stuff before it seizes up solid. That plus concentrating on hitting little balls across a huge lawn a few hours ago just about cooked my elderly mental goose.
Meantime Her Ladyship’s legs are sore as all get out from yesterday’s unfamiliar workout session with her trainer. This gittin’ old shit sucketh mightily. At least she avoided any migraine or dizziness this time.
Home now in the gathering nighttime chill and I’ve enjoyed a rum + eggnog. I have now determined how much rum is too much: about 50/50. If it’s ~1/3rd rum it’s much better.
Tomorrow I might golf early, but probably not. Also need to seek a couple of junk gifts for the two or 3 XMas party white elephant gift exchanges we’re signed up for. Time once again for Big Boy lunch w my pal while Her Ladyship Mah Jonggs all afternoon. Dance again in the evening, hopefully with more other couples.
As to y’all …
Yaay for hot water & reasonable (!) prices!!
My, aren’t you miss Dolly Domestic today. I spent decades cooking every day but I’m ashamed to admit that’s more stuff than I’ve cooked in the entire last year. My own daily breakfast doesn’t quite count.
Perhaps I should not mention that when Her Ladyship joined my world she came along with a set of a dozen matching branded scoops in graded sizes from muffins to cookie dough to butter to melon ballers to … . And a collection of a couple dozen butter molds. And many cookie cutters. And several sizes of biscuit cutters. And …
As she so often says, “collecting the equipment for a hobby is a separate hobby from doing the hobby itself.” She’s a total whiz at the first part of that. And no slouch at the second, just decreasingly in the mood to play with those toys rather than look at them. Or get more of them.
I see you’ve recently read The Year of Living Dangerously and taken it to heart. I’m not sure I’m quite brave enough to try that quip around here.
Yes. They are wonderful animals if a bit inconvenient near humans.
OTOH, the fact it came to town suggests it was in raggedy shape and seeking the easy pickins of trash, cats, and small dogs because it was no longer able to hunt wildlife successfully in its decrepit condition. The car may have saved it from a slow miserable ending.
I can’t imagine why. You’ve only done the work of 12 people in the last two days. Relax and enjoy it; you’ve vastly more than earned it.
Called “pedigree failure” amongst the hoi-polloi. But yeah. It’s out there and you (any you) may well find it.
I recall a quip from a cheesy science fiction story from the 1960s where aliens have invaded Washington DC. A human envoy is attempting to bluff the aliens as to our war-tech prowess while they’re in the Pentagon threatening their alien takeover. Visiting the men’s room he points to the row of stalls and declares the toilets to be some sort of matter / anti-matter planetary defense projectors. Then says “Some of our best output leaves via these.” Har har. But he may have a had a point.
Yes. Some of our best output.
That’s sorta my attitude. Don’t know, don’t care, and anything I did know would be irrelevant. Then again I’m pretty much a familial nihilist. I get that some folks are bigly fired up about that stuff.
Damn, girl! That sux mightily. Hope you can see the PT often enough to progress, not merely be tortured in place every 2 weeks with no net progress.
A totally reasonable response if ever I heard one. That guy is a real jerk of a houseguest. Blam! Blam!
G’night all. The day of Hammering awaits us all, and all too soon.
I just thought the title fit with the hazards of teasing your wife with witty wordplay.
Perhaps she’ll laugh in appreciation at your razor wit and perhaps she’ll bean you with a 12" frying pan when next you fall asleep. Sometimes best not to tempt Fate. That would be dangerous.
‘At the store, can you buy a new frying pan? I’m a little squeamish about using the one we use to kill people.’ - ‘Mary Bland’ (Mary Woronov), Eating Raoul (Good lord. Mary Woronov will be 80 on Friday! Where’s that Pac Man wilty .wav?)
many things taste better after a day in the frig like meatloaf.
speaking of key fobs-Hubs went and got his oil changed today. At one point the service person said he couldn’t start the car, the key fob wasn’t working. He rubbed it on his chest which apparently got some static electricity going and was able to start the car. Hubs said I’ll have to go and buy a new battery right away. Service person asked, ‘don’t you have another key fob?’ Hubs replied yes but it’s in Chicago. Service person gave him a weird look. Since Hubs won’t be able to drive for about 5ish months, we’re letting our daughter have his car for the duration. She’s training in next week and while Amtrak is scheduled to get in at 11:42, most of the time it’s closer to midnight or after. So, we gave her the other key fob and will take Hubs car to the train station earlier in the day then she can just drive home.
We do the same with our ‘Florida room’.
My Over the Hump Day: Picked up a circular from Kroger, picked up the WeRateDogs page a day calendar from Barnes & Noble, went to Fitness Center to workout, filtered water, addressed a bunch of Christmas cards, mailed some, will mail rest tomorrow after I write some notes in them. We were hoping to bake some Christmas cookies today but Hubs needed a nap and I said we could do it tomorrow.
Yay! I hope that means more comments about furry balls. Always good for a chuckle.
I just had breakfast (homemade scones with home made jam), and those mini egg bites sound yummy. I think the next time I do a big baking spree for hubby’s breakfast (quick breads), I need to do some egg bites for me. Tomorrow’s supposed to be rainy, and the store’s open, so perfect for stocking up the cupboards and baking up a storm.
Thanks for the explanation - and yay for minimizing food waste.
Mooooom, I so love one-bowl recipes. My favorite online recipe source is revamping some of her recipes so that they can be made one-bowl. I haz a happy.
Flyboy good news on the water heater. Sounds like that plumber is a keeper.
It’s only dull because you didn’t apply the shine yet. And I like reading what Mumpers write - it’s like an ansynchronous coffee/tea/water/wine/beer/cocktail chat.
I think I need a nap just reading all that. Whew!
After reading so much about yummy Thanksgiving leftovers, I’ve decided I’m going to do something fancy for Christmas. I found a recipe for holiday dressing muffins, which sounds like it give us a lot of dressing which can be easily portioned for the freezer.
Today’s a vacation day, so we slept in a bit. Now to get dressed and figure out the train route to Basel. There’s a bagel shop I want to stop at - hopefully they are better than the other bagel offerings in Switzerland.
since its after midnight lete me get this offa my chest
YYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY! Today is the 7th the day that medicare enrollment period is fucking over and I won’t get calls bugging us about their various ways to rip you off in accents you can barely understand or recordings that make intelligent women sound like half-deaf bimbos that start at 5 am …
Of course, its Pearl Harbor Day… so I’ll watch videos on YouTube while thanking the Navy and Army that CA never became Japanese imperial territory because well mean ain’t the word for what their occupied places went through
in other news :
agreed … if I’m in the mood only time I need snow these days is the day before and the day of and maybe the day after Xmas
had an annoying experience at the eye doctor … i missed the first appointment a month ago but finally got a 2nd one which I went to
Now my appointment was at 2:30 but I didn’t get seen until almost a quarter to four and that took almost an hour by itself because I had 6 different tests in different rooms with waits between each test by the time I saw the actual eye doctor and had the normal eye exam it was a quarter to five …and since the spot where you get the glasses were apparently separate from the doctor’s office they closed at 4 and even tho the eyeglasses person was just sitting there talking to the somewhat cute receptionist I have to go back to get the glasses…
This is annoying because if they don’t have frames I like I’ve of wasted at least 12 bucks in Uber rides and this is the week were pinched on funds … if I had to pay for the glasses I wouldn’t bother but I’m on the ca state and federal plan they’re covered …
and between money woes and unreliable;e shipping in the stuff we are buying and decorating hassles I want to tell the holiday season where to go how to get there and what it can do to itself once it arrives …
heh, we found out that some of our American Indian ancestries came from an ancestor who ran off with one of the local Michigan princesses when she was about 13 and he was in his early 30s in the late 1700s and there’s differing accounts of whether it was elopement or kidnapping …
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 31 Amurrkin out and cloudy with a predicted high of 59 and N.O.S. for the day. BRR! This mornin’ we shall betake ourselves over to the church house so I can take care of candle and other duties, plus have a sit down with the other Verger to discuss upcomin’ doin’s such as the BIIIIIIG Christmas Eve service. After that OYKW and I shall go to the hog trough Golden Corral for the main need to feed of the day. This will be followed by sloth, general overall uselessness, nappage, day drinkin’ and other such non-productive activity. We’ll be worn out when the day is over!
Flyboy yay for new water heater and for payin’ less $$$ this time around.
shades you reminded me of the fact that I need to make an appointment with the eye doc as I am past due. This means I shall pick out what OYKW calls another pair of old fart frames. I go for durable over style, that’s how I roll.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, alas and bother, for the second day in a row I suppose I must needs purtify and don attire acceptable for bein’ amongst the great unwashed. Oh what I go through for my public!
It’s 46F, cloudy and drippy outside. The expected high is 48F, and it will rain most of the day…again. We’re expecting another quarter inch total in rainfall.
flyboy, I’m glad the new water heater and installation were less than expected. That’s always a pleasant surprise.
I was kept awake by my husband’s tossing and turning and finally rolled out of bed at 3:15 a.m. The pups have been outside to potty and wrassle a few times, but I’m trying to hold off on feeding them until 5:00 or 6:00 a.m. I’m hoping they’ll settle down and take another siesta.
Today is my last work day for the week, but I need to finish writing up a policy regarding telework for our employees. It’s not really a policy; it’s just something reiterating the policy and management’s expectations for those who opt to telework. Some folks are causing headaches, so it’s time to pull out the departmental regulation and the vocabulary from the telework agreement we all signed and shine some light on a few things. In a non-confrontational way, of course, but with some steel 'neath the velvet because a couple of folks are sure to pounce and try and find a way to pick apart what I say. Thus, quotes directly from DR and the telework agreements are a must and will be sprinkled in amongst the rest of the document. Sigh, it’s ridiculous that I even have to do this.
I’ve always thought those embossed rolling pins were pretty cool, and I wanted some, too. But the reality is that I rarely bake, and they’d take up valuable space in my drawers.
All this talk about holiday meals has reminded me that I need to order the prime rib roast for Christmas. Since our holiday gathering will be much smaller this year, the roast needs to be smaller. Honestly, I prefer the soup I make after Christmas to the holiday meal. But the roast has become a tradition, so I shall continue making it. It’s kind of a Christmas of firsts; the first without Polar in 14 years, the first without my daughter, the first without the grandkids. I take that back; there was one year the kids went back to Missouri for Christmas, but we celebrated upon their return.
nellie, I’m sorry your knee continues to be troublesome.
Today is my son’s 31st birthday. I’ll have to send him a happy birthday message later this morning. I don’t think he’d appreciate one this early in the morning. He hasn’t decided if he wants to come up or have us come down this weekend, and I won’t push him either way. If he decides he wants to celebrate another time, that’s alright. I think he’s entering another blue funk, and it’s just best to give him options and let him decide. Pushing things shuts him down, and I don’t want to do that. Besides, he might make plans with his friends, which is good.
Okily-dokily. I need to finish my coffee, finish loading the dishwasher and turn it on before I head upstairs to work.
I find it interesting in a “look-what-it-took-to-get-to-me” sorta way. I know both sides of the family emigrated from Poland in the early 1900s, but I don’t know why. I know they all settled in Baltimore, but I don’t know why. I know my paternal grandmother went back to Poland for a while and that’s where my Aunt Stella was born. One of my cousins went to the town in Poland that our grandfather came from and met up with some relatives, but I don’t know what, if anything, she found out. But I would find it interesting to know what all those folks did in Poland - I have the impression there are miners and farmers, but I’m not sure where that impression came from. While none of it ultimately matters in my life, other than it all led to my life, I still would like to know more of my history.
FCD on the other hand doesn’t know and doesn’t care. Nor did his parents. There’s at least one German surname in the mix, and some Scottish and English. I don’t entirely understand their lack of curiosity, but each to his own, I guess.
That’s some hack! But also scary to think that a fob battery could leave you stranded. Must discuss with FCD…
SIL asked for the recipe, and I love that we have a copier left from when FCD had his business - I was able to giver her a copy without resorting to paper and pencil!!!
I woke around 1 to visit the throne room and apparently had enough sleep that my brain was wide awake. I read a bit, then eventually sorta dozed for an hour or so. I foresee a long day. Dammit.
Daughter got us freebie tickets to a local holiday lights display - we’ll be going on Firday. it’s one of the milder days this week, which is great, since it’s a walk-around display. MIL will be in her wheelchair. Then on Sat, it’s across the bay to Kent Island to see the train displays.
Tomorrow, my car goes to the Hyundai dealer to get the recall taken care of. So much for running errands. Except I could do it in the truck. We shall see… As for today, Tobias will be here in an hour or so. I’m finding that going to their house early so he can nap is a really good deal. I wish I’d thought of it months ago.
