iTunes - Can't Get Download Where I Want It

I just downloaded Steve Earle’s “Townes” album. It was placed in a new folder called “Townes” which was placed in a new folder called “Steve Earle”. I already have a folder called “Earle, Steve”, so I moved “Townes” there. I then dragged it to iTunes expecting it to be placed in “Earle, Steve”, but instead a new “Steve Earle” icon was created with the album. Obviously there is something going on behind the scenes here which I don’t understand. How do I get “Townes” to “Earle, Steve” in iTunes???

ITunes isn’t designed for you to be messing with folders. Just edit the “Get Info” data and things should appear correctly in the menus.

E.g., each track

Title: Pancho and Lefty
Sort Title: Pancho and Lefty
Artist: Steve Earle
Sort Artist: Earle Steve
Album Artist: Steve Earle
Sort Album Artist: Earle Steve
Album: Townes
Sort Album: Earle Steve 2009
Composer: Townes Van Zandt
Sort Composer: Van Zandt Townes

In iTunes preferences, is the “Keep iTunes Music folder organized” box checked? If it is, uncheck it and see if that gets you what you want. But you know the beauty of the way iTunes manages your music is that with well-maintained ID3 tags, it doesn’t matter where you keep the actual music files.
