Tuesday nights at the local Friday’s is trivia night. The family goes and always had fun. But lately the smartphone cheaters have made it unenjoyable. One guy was caught with a cell phone and the crowd made him put it away and another team had their answer disqualified. I know it’s supposed to be fun but the ywo were caught despite there being almost no active enforcement. One guy looked in the answer bucket and changed his answer right in front of the host. 50% of the tables have phones out. I just refuse to compete against the cheaters anymore.
I know what you mean. It’s the whole “Why should I bother actually knowing anything when I can win by Googling” mentality. And it’s just getting more pervasive.
I’m glad that so far this isn’t a problem at our library trivia night.
We are reminded not to do that, and I’ve never seen anyone cheating. Doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened, but judging by the scores people are being honest.
As our moderator says *“The prizes aren’t worth cheating for!”:*D It’s usually doodads from the library, fridge magnets and the like.
Look around for another trivia game. I’ve never noticed cheaters at the place I go to.
Don’t they announce and enforce rules against that? That’s the way it’s been at any trivia night I’ve ever been to.
Announce? yes. Enforce? no.
Bucket on the table, everyone’s phones get turned off and put into it before the contest. Problem solved. Of course, the management have to enforce this (and provide the buckets). Maybe if you tell them you won’t be coming back because of their lax enforcement, they’d take such a suggestion seriously. Bars *really *like money.
I hate it when this happens. It can be really hard for them to enforce this rule given the layout of some bars but I have found that people are usually pretty good about it. Honestly, I do not see whats so difficult about not being a damn cheater. It’s supposed to be for fun.
I second Rachellelogram’s suggestion. You may have to look around a little but if you can find a good trivia night that is free of cheaters it will be worth it.
tell management to get a bucket full of water. violators will be dunked.
I didn’t really know much about trivia nights other than they exist, and some folks show up just to play.
I’m coming to realize how cut-throat the competition can be.
I visited my boy at college a couple of months ago, and we went to lunch at some little burger joint. They started up trivia while we were there. I got some general sense of teams, turning in answers, and so forth, but really didn’t pay attention until the questions started.
I knew all the answers but one, and my son knew several, and the one I didn’t. We should have participated!
Anyway, during the game, we noticed 2 or 3 groups Googling like mad on their smartphones and writing down their answers. I jokingly pointed one guy out to our waitress as she brought us refills, and the guy glared at me for the rest of the game.
Damn. I didn’t really mean to rat anyone out. I have no idea what the prize may have been, but come on. You’re college kids. You know everything already, so why cheat?
It’s pretty disappointing to see now many cheaters there are, and the fact that many more just accept it.
Just the way I was raised, I reckon.
