I've Got a New Puppy!!!!

We picked up little harvey today. His big sister Dez is amazingly good with him considering she hates most dogs.

He’s a real cutie.

Hmm, re the drinking water: I think puppies have to learn how to drink out of a bowl. It wouldn’t hurt to put a little water in the syringe and let her drink it.

I’m sorry she’s off to a little bit of a rough start. Maybe it’s just the worms giving her problems? I haven’t dealt with this sort of thing, but I’ve only had 3 puppies in the last 25 years, so my experience base isn’t large.

Keep us posted.

She’s better this morning, but she’s still having a bit of a rough time.

Last night, she couldn’t pass her stool. When I talked to the vet, he said that it might be a side-effect of the wormer-- that they had sort of bound up in her bowel. He suggested a baby enema. Thankfully, nature took its course before I had to administer it. This morning, the pendulum swung in the other direction with diarrhea.

I gave her 1.5 CC of water from a syringe last night, since she wouldn’t drink from the bowl. This morning, she did drink a little on her own. Not knowing how much she needs, I’m worried she’ll get dehydrated.

She slept very well last night. I put her to bed at eleven, and she slept until 5 AM. After giving her a little breakfast, she slept until 9:30.

She’s still not playing much. Her main exercize/recreation seems to be climbing the nearest human. She loves it, and will do it over and over again, climbing from the lap to the top of your shoulder. (I told hubby we should have named her Hillary after Sir Edmund.)

My adult dog mostly ignores her, except if Polaris walks in her direction, then she growls. We’re keeping them seperate, taking the introduction slowly. We’re also pointedly showing her that she hasn’t lost any status by inviting her up on the bed and couch, giving her treats, and lavishing affection on her.

Despite all of the sleepless nights and worry, the old adage is quite true: Happiness is a warm puppy.
