J-Lo's Dress -- Questions for the ladies

OK, Arden. Maybe I wasn’t clear, but I’m not talking about a bra under a sheer top. I’m talking nipples for all to see!

What’s the thinking behind that? Why would a woman do it?

J-Lo, Geena, Toni, et.al. wear clothes like that for one reason - to get publicity. And it works, would you even know who J-Lo was if she hadn’t worn that dress last year?

What really boggles my mind is how ugly her dresses are. The Toni Braxton number would have been beautiful and elegant with just a bit more fabric. But Jennifer’s dress this year was an ugly color and an unflattering design. Last year’s dress was downright frumpy. It looked like a little-old-lady housecoat that had come unbelted and made her look pudgy.

Yes, Chief, when I wear something revealing I do expect to be looked at. That’s kinda the idea. Like Arden, I don’t go braless as a rule, but I have on occasion worn see-through tops that revealed my undergarment du jour, and no, I am not embarrassed by getting looks or even comments because I fully anticipate it when exposing myself like that. I have a nice body, why shouldn’t I show it off a bit every now and then? What Jennifer Lopez wears, I think, is over the top–there is a line between sexy and trashy and she is frequently on the wrong side of that line IMO. But obviously, she doesn’t think the same way I do, and she feels her nipples are worth sharing with the world.

With apologies to Kurt Weill and Ira Gershwin, I present “The Saga of Jenny Lopez”

There once was a singer named Jenny
Whose virtues were varied and many
Excepting that she thought it’s
Good business to show her tits
And Jenny points a moral
With which you cannot quarrel
As you will find . . .

Jenny made her mind up
When she was three
That she would be the youngest girl on MTV
One day she toddled on the set
Wearing nothing but a net—
Little Jenny was a star by the very next day.

Poor Jenny,
Bright as a penny
Her morals may be slightly wack—
She shocked her dad and mother
A sister and a brother
But she would show off her rack.

Jenny made her mind up
When she was 12
That into gangsta rap she would delve
But she was told by the Fly Girls
It was quite a blow
That compared to even them, she dressed like a ho.

Poor Jenny,
Bright as a penny
She turned out many top-40 hits;
To Jenny I’m beholden
Her heart was big and golden
And so were her often-seen tits.

Jenny made her mind up at 22
To get herself a husband was the thing to do
So she got herself all dolled up
Undressed to have fun—
And she got herself a Daddy:
But he packed a gun.

Poor Jenny,
Bright as a penny
Her road sure has been rough—
Deserved a bed of roses
But history discloses
That romance went up in a “Puff.”

Jenny made her mind up at 25
That she would be the nekkedest woman alive
When she showed up at the Oscars, “Variety” related
TV tubes blew out
In some 33 States.

Poor Jenny,
Bright as a penny
She’s got no equal
It’s true,
Many other ladies
Think she’s dressed for Hades—
‘Cause in heaven she’d turn all cold and blue.

Jenny, Jenny, Jenny, Jenny
Jenny points a moral with which you cannot quarrel
Her career’s been quite a mess
Jenny and her saga
Prove that you’re gaga
If you just throw out the tops of your dress!

Brava!!!

Of course, it should be “relates” to rhyme with “States” (dammit dammit dammit).

Eve, that’s great! Someone needs to put together a webpage with all the SDMB filk on it.

Chief. I have been known to show off the nips for people other than the SYL, but that’s an exception rather than the rule and it’s always been parties at my house. Why? I felt like showing off and they were drunken revelries. I still get the grin and “Nice shirt!”. [sub]the fact that it let to boob contest among the other party goers was a bonus[/sub]

BTW, it was the Grammies to which Jennifer wore the scarf.

I would like to add Goldie Hawn and the ever-classy Dame Julie Andrews to the lovely list.

And Renee Zellwegger to the “Huh?” list.

My, opinion, those with the least talent show the most skin. Those with talent do not have to show skin to be popular.

Sorry if I have offended any J-Lo fans.

As fashion, I found the dress questionable. As advertising, it was brilliant.

I had never heard of Jennifer Lopez before she wore her last fashion mistake to the Grammies. Now it’s unlikely that anyone who has a passing acquaintance with entertainment news doesn’t know who she is.

Almost every article about the Academy Awards contains a mention of Jennifer Lopez. Not bad for someone who wasn’t even nominated. Sheer marketing genius (pardon the pun). [smilie omitted in deference to the OP]

BTW, if you ever see ME wearing an outfit that reveals my nipples, you have my permission to take me aside and quietly point out that I need to go home and change.

Thanks, but why on earth would we want to do that?

Hey, I LOVED Kate Hudson’s dress! It was so neo-Edwardian.
Love that.

What IS it with the nipple showing thing? I saw Mary Steenburgeon wearing a dress like that at oh-was it the Golden Globes? Or People’s Choice? Either way, it’s just tacky tacky tacky.

Just a question, why are we all amazed that someone wore a gauze dress?

If you look at the runways in Europe recently you will see alot of “headlights” showing. It seems that gauze tops without a bra or slip are the fashion.

I just expect more headlight sightings in the future since that is the way fashion is going.

Not half bad. Ever thought of doing some writing on a more or less serious basis?

I’m obviously going out on a limb here.
I thought Jennifer Lopez looked gorgeous. I didn’t like the green scarf from the Grammys, but I thought this dress was beautiful. I loved the way the the color heightened the color of her skin, and I really liked the lines of the - uh - is “bodice” too frumpy a word?

Anyway, she looked damn good, and I don’t have any particular problem with her showing off her nipples. Now if she would just stop singing …

In my opinion, the real crime at the Oscars was Juliet Binoche. She is one of the most beautiful women in the world, but what the hell was that thing she wearing?

On occasion, I do wear sheer tops, with or without a bra depending on my mood, and where I’m going. Why? Because I can? I dunno. If I like the top, I’m wearing it! Why wear a sheer top over a sweatshirt? I’m not wearing it because I want to give a free show, but because “I” happen to like it and how I look in it. If guys happen to like it as well, great. Sides… men can go topless without getting arrested. Women can’t.

I don’t wear things like this in any sort of “family-type” settings. When I want you to get a gander, I’ll give you a gander. When I don’t want to, I won’t. It’s my right to give you a gander, not your right to get one

I think it is indeed appropriate for men/women to notice/comment. If I didn’t expect the comments, I’d save the shirt to just wear around the house. If it’s my right to wear a fishnet shirt, then everyone has the right to comment, good or bad. The only comments I have ever gotten that I didn’t like were the women who tell me “Your tits are falling out of your shirt…(with bra)” and “I can see your tits…(without bra)”. I usually just jump and down several times to illustrate my tits aren’t going anywhere, while assuring them of the fact that I do own a mirror at home and am quite aware of what I’m wearing. To the women who call me “slut”, “bitch”, etc… (yes it happens… shocking huh?) “Well, yes…I am a slut and a bitch and will wear a see through shirt if I feel like it… what’s your point”? Women who don’t want to wear em, don’t have to, but if they do, they shouldn’t get offended by any comment, good or bad, because both will happen.

And yes, I hated that dress she had. Bad color and looked like it was just three yards of different fabric and she made half a toga. Might have looked good if less imagination had been put into it to make it look “trend setting”, or if someone else were wearing it.

[sub]I just don’t like the slutty bitch, what can I say?[/sub]

Think anyone saw the pin?

I don’t wear a bra, and sometimes I’ll put on a shirt that’s more sheer than I realized. Look if you want, keep your comments to yourself. Fair? Dunno, dont care.

For Ms. Lopez, and virtually everybody else in show business, the Academy Awards are not just an evening out. It is serious business – and all business. It’s the business of publicity. Celebrity requires constant publicity, and publicity is money for these people. IRL, the actors can abhor their actions, and we certainly can deride them, but always remember: What you see on TV and at the movies IS NOT REAL!

Jennifer, Geena, and Toni may be pushing the envelope, but so did Marilyn, Joan, and Clara. It’s just that our collective concious requires more to shock us than before.

If you think it’s bad now, just wait. It’ll get worse before it gets better.

BTW, I must applaud her for not resorting to surgical enhancement of her bust, unlike so many of her contemporaries. I doubt that Pamela Anderson could wear that dress – too much scar tissue.

What the hell is wrong with nipples? I don’t find them disgusting or unsightly at all! We know that when there’s tits, there’s nipples on the end of them, why hide it?

I do think it’s a bit weird that Ms. Lopez is showing off her tits, since they are probably the least attractive part of her anatomy - not that they are ugly, just average, as opposed to her ass, midriff, etc…

Her ugliest part is her brain, which she hasnt manage to expose, but next year - who knows?

(sorry, I totally hate ‘j-lo’ I think she is an idiot)
