OK, I was flipping through the channels last night an as I passed the Academy Awards up popped Jennifer Lopez…
In a see-through dress! She could of saved some money and gone topless. Now I’ve seen women dressed this way before (dated a couple, too) and I’ve never known how to act.
My questions…
Do women consciously dress so we can see everything or is this more of an accident? Do you wear see-through tops? Why?
Why is it appropiate for us to get a gander of your nipples at, say, a ball or evening at a show, and not Saturday afternoon at the movies?
If it is a conscious decision, is it appropriate for men to look/comment on it?
Not that I’m complaining, mind you. I’m just curious.
When I wear one-on purpose-I expect to be looked at and with the males in my life I would be disappointed if they didn’t comment.
But I’ve met females who dress that way-on purpose-and get offended when men look. [roll eyes smilie ommitted]
Yes, it’s on purpose when something that sheer gets put on. You can tell by looking at it before you put it on and certainly when you try it on.
Why is it okay for evening wear and not for a Saturday afternoon at the movies? Because sheer is evening wear, silly. Like sequins. Only a cheap tart would dress like that during the day! [grinning smilie omitted]
Here is a link to her dress for those who did no get the pleasure of seeing her. It was funny, when I first saw her I told my SO “Wow she covered up this year!” Then saw it later, I was wrong. When she was presenting that one award they only showed her from the shoulders up.
After having seen the links (I didn’t watch the show last night), I have one thing to say:
WHAT THE HELL WAS SHE THINKING?! She may as well have gone topless on national television. That’s it. I have nothing nice to say. Day or night, she’s a tart and Coco Chanel is rolling over in her grave. [sub]she is dead, right?[/sub]
Oh, and thanks JeffB. That brought a grin to my face.
Ooh, wow, missed this last night. I was doing homework and I flipped it on briefly while Bjork sang her song. I liked that movie, but I wasn’t really impressed with her performance.
Anyway, I found out for the first time right then that Alec Guiness had died. That really sucks, although I guess if he REALLY was a part of my life I would have known about that before, huh. In a non-morbid way, the In Memoriam video is usually my favorite part of the oscars. I don’t know how to explain that except that it always seems like such a tribute to Hollywood, and somehow seems, well, Golden Age. Can anyone articulate this better?
Anyway, I can’t complain about that dress, but she should have had the guts to just go topless. It wouldn’t have been that big a deal, and it would have been groundbreaking. Well, in any case, she outdid herself, which I’m sure was the point.
When I first caught a glimpse of J-Lo, I just thought my pervert-vision was acting up again (heh, heh), but it shouldn’t have been a surprise. As Marx said, she outdid last years. Actually what shocked me was the swan or whatever Bjork had slung over herself.
I said almost exactly the same thing: “Wow! She wore clothes this time!” Clearly I was mistaken. I guess since that Versace number didn’t actually show her nipples she had to do something different this year.
ChiefScott, if you ever happen to see me in a transparent top, you have my permission to look at my breasts.
My guess is that all the mirrors in the Lopez home have been taken down to sniff cocaine off of, and poor Jennifer had no IDEA she was wearing an invisible blouse. All her friends and family must have been too high to take her aside and whisper, “Jennie, dear, you forgot to put your bra on.”
While we’re discussing Oscar gowns, didn’t you love Bjork’s touching tribute to Koo-Koo the Bird Girl?
I thought Jennifer Lopez’s dress at the Oscars was much prettier than that hideous green 2-sided-tape-required number she wore to the Golden Globes last year.
Bjork was a crack-up. Hope she was going for laughs.
Catherine Zeta-Jones, Halle Berry, Julia Roberts and Ellen Burnstyn (sp?) all were visions of loveliness.
Ashley Judd, Juliette Binoche, and Kate Hudson’s dresses go in the “What were they thinking?” category.
Angelina Jolie looked like she was heading off to a business function and Sarah-Jessica Parker looked underdressed in her mini-dress.
Gotta agree with PunditLisa on her lovliness list (I’m viewing the red carpet images from JeffB’s link). I would add Marcia Gay Harden to that list. She looks yummy in that ruby gown and Coco Lee shoulda gotten better fasion advice. That multicolored striped sequin horror was just ick.
So when you decide to wear something sheer is it so folks can see your nipples? What’s the thinking behind that? “Look at my great boobs!” Or is there another reason?
After you’ve left wearing a tranparent top, do you ever find yourself embarassed?
What type of comments are acceptable? Would “Nice nips,” do it?
Call me old fashioned, but when I have a girlfriend I consider her boobs “mine” and I don’t want anyone else looking at them (I know, I know. That’s politically incorrect. They’re your boobs to do with as you like. But that’s how I feel. Let the beatings commence.)
Maybe Jen wore a see through dress to stop the boys from shouting, “Get yer baps oot, get yer baps oot, Get yer baps oot for the lads!”
When the baps are already visible, there’s no point in shouting for them, or so she thought. Now she only has to worry about the boys shouting “Oi, Lopez, NICE TITS!”
Well, Cheif, considering it would be a danger to myself and others (especially in cold weather) to go braless, my nips don’t usually show. But I have some gorgeous undergarments that I sometimes like to showoff.
Embarrassed? Why? That would be silly after I dressed that way on purpose, don’t you think? Usually what I get is a grin and “Nice shirt, Theresa.”
They can look all they want. I have nice boobs and the Significantly Younger Lover kinda likes it when other guys admire that which goes home with him from the party.
Ethilrist: Yes, Ms. Lopez’s garment had more fabric in it than Ms. Braxton’s (I loved the description of it in that link) but I know I’ve come to expect trashy clothes on the Grammy’s. I think people expect more from the Academy Awards attendees. I do anyway.
