24 fans rejoice! It appears that we will have three more seasons of Jack Bauer Thigh-Shooting, Dammit-Yelling, Loved-Ones-Dying-Horribly, Terrorist-Throat-Slitting Fun ahead . . .
Apparently he’s getting a cool $40 million in this deal. Not bad. And here I was sure they were going to kill him at the end of the season.
This also tends to destroy any tension built up so far, after all, if we know Jack Bauer’ll be “Bauering” his way through another couple seasons, we know that the terrorist attacks won’t be succesful for another couple seasons…
unless they (directors/screenwriters) depart from mainstream concepts, let a major terror attack occur in the 24 universe, and CTU/Jack have to live with the aftermath and effects…
Anyone read the Rolling Stone interview with Keifer Sutherland? He said he heard about a college drinking game where you take a shot every time Jack says “Dammit,” so on purpose in one episode he said “dammit” four times in a row.
Not necessarily. We know that Kiefer is coming back, but maybe Jack won’t.
Perhaps Keifer will play Jack’s mutated clone. Or perhaps he’ll play his evil twin Zack Bauer. Or maybe they’ll show the adventures of Jack’s yet-to-be-born son in the year 2036. They can rename the show “24: The Next Generation.”
As for the loss of dramatic tension, I don’t think knowing the hero will survive will necessarily hurt the show any more than it does any other series or movie. Most of the time it’s a given that the main character is going to pull through somehow, and yet with good storytelling and direction the show/film can still be suspenseful. Besides, most of the tension on 24 (especially this season) has been centered around which of the umpteen supporting characters is going to bite the dust this week. The show does such a good job keeping me worried about another “Edgarcide” that I’m relieved I don’t have to bite my my nails about seeing Jack get blowed up real good. (And even if he does, he’ll just crawl out from the wreckage and dust himself off, like the hero in an old cliffhanger serial.)
