A thread in General Questions about Jack the Ripper reminded me of something. Why in the world did the creators of the television series Three’s Company name their lead male character “Jack Tripper”. Did it never occur to them that it looks and sounds like Jack T[he]. Ripper?
I doubt that the developers gave it anywhere near that much thought.
Jack’s name was obviously derived from the character Robin Tripp in “Man About the House” (you do know that the show was lifted almost intact from the BBC) played by Richard O’Sullivan. Tripp combined with John Ritter’s name produced Tripper, which also echoed his innate gift for physical comedy.
'scuse the nitpick, but Man About the House was made by Thames Television for the ITV network, not BBC.
Plus there were all those amusing episodes where the three roomies and their landlord would drop acid together (Jack the Tripper, as it were) and have orgies.
Yes but if they did base his name on Jack The Ripper there could have been a series finale worth seeing.
Since publishing my original post, I’ve learned that there was even an episode of Three’s Company titled “Jack the Ripper”. But it’s about Jack undergoing assertiveness training, not disembowling his roommates.
But it does explain why they had to keep bringing in new actresses.
