Jax Mayor Deegan, on a London radio show, criticized Trump’s immigration policies claiming his plans amount to a 'concentration camp type situation.
MAGA is outraged, demanding an apology and her resignation ‘in disgrace’.
Later, a plane flew a racist banner critical of the Sheriff (who is black) who also said she should apologize.
A bit of a mess there, fake outrage and the MAGA push toward authoritarianism.
The question is what answers does Mayor Deegan and those like her take away from the attack. Because so far, we’ve had two responses from Republicans: backing down cravenly, retracting their comments and kissing the ring of Trump, which rarely helps much - because once tainted, there’s always a more loyal toady to primary you. Or stand by their convictions, and once again be primaried, doomed to fall unless it’s an area with no (D) candidate and they pick up crossover support.
It’s a sign of the times (End times perhaps!) that once you’ve been tarred, you’re screwed no matter what you do. So I’ll give Mayor Deegan the minimal credit due for at least trying. Sadly, they’ll soon be stuck bootlicking trying to get back into graces, or another semi-principled Former politician, likely replaced by something worse.
As Mayor Deegan is a Democrat, I don’t think Republican responses have predictive value in relation to her decisions. And Jacksonville apparently uses a blanket primary, which means that running a crazy MAGA loyalist in it is likely to split the Republican vote, rather than harm her prospects.
Given all that, is it possible that this MAGA “outrage” helps drive more D turnout in the relatively strong for D Jacksonville area this cycle? I’d suspect so.
