IMHO, jag-wahr for American English, jag-u-are for British English. “Jag-wire” is as stupid and annoying as “reel-a-tor” and “jool-er-ee.”
According to the doofus from CBS who called last week’s Browns/Jaguars game, it’s “jag-wire”
According to me, it’s “jag-war”.
jag-wahr
Not jag war
for the car Jag-you-err.
For the animal, arrrrrrghhhhhh!
IMHO, neither. Instead it’s jag-wa(h). Definitely not an r sound at the end, but then, my people don’t believe in words with r sounds at the end anyway.
Just like it’s spelled. Jagwire.
Jagyouargh. Nothing sounds quite as wrong as (either of) the US pronunciation.
You guys crack me up, you really do!
gregorio, never heard of that bike. I am a Trek fan, but wow!
Oh, and here’s another toughie:
“February”.
Don McClean (bless him!): Sings “…and Feb-u-ary made me shiver”.
That “r” is tough to get in there, isn’t it?
Thanks

Many centuries ago I worked for a company that did some marketing for Jaguar. The official word from the source was that Jag-u-ar and Jag-war were exceptable, but Jag-Wire would get you executed.
As for February, that’s an in-ter-esting question.
“exceptable” - I love it, l4l!
I hope you were making a “play on words” (“acceptable”)?
Thanks

Crap…and me write for a living,
HAHAHAHAHA! :):)
I think we need to be friends! Hang on, request coming through!
Thanks for making my day (without meaning to!)!!!
Quasi
jag-wa(h)r for the animal
Jag-yoo-ar for the car
As the SDMB’s leading authority on this user name, I will accept both dʒæɡwɑr or dʒæɡjuː.ər, but not the title pronunciation, unless it refers to the bike equip brand mentioned above.
(Actually I have no idea how to read those IPA things so call me anything you like and insist it’s correct :smack: )
arrrrrrghhhhhh! is also acceptable but you might not have time to get it out!
/dʒæɡwɑr/ == jag-wahr or /dʒæɡjuː.ər/ == jag-you-er
I assume you don’t mean for that “gh” at the end to be pronounced? That would be quite odd to me.
(Yes, in these pronunciation threads, it would be convenient if everyone was familiar with IPA or some ASCII transliteration thereof…)
I’ll tell you, but first ah need to arn my clothes.
In My Life, I don’t think I have ever wanted a B.F.G. for Xmas more… but only if it came with unlimited Gag-You-Waaah seeking ammo.
Please Mr Kringle? I’ll fill in all the holes in the asphault. Promise…!
Argh in the pirate sense.
