James Brown dead .. .RIP

Crap.

73 is pretty decent. For someone who lived as hard as he did, it’s actually pretty impressive. But still…

No more celebrity hot tub parties?

Well, my mom said that he used to get pulled over all the time in Aiken, SC for drunk driving. I must say that she wasn’t as sad as some people are about his death.

RIP, you wifebeating asshole.

Well, this gives me an excuse to whip out this old chestnut.

I didn’t know he’d beaten his wife. That sucks. Life is like that a lot of times — the good, the bad, the ugly and the great are often rolled into one package. Fuck you for beating your wife, James Brown. But thank you for the music.

I will miss James Brown!
He did it all bigger than life, even in death, he upstaged the birth of that other guy… “Jesus Whatshisname”…

Rock in Peace, James

First thing I did when I heard was to play this song.

But :frowning:

He did, along with a bunch of other criminal shit, and went to prison for a couple years, etc. He seemed pretty much like an asshole to me when he was alive, his dying shouldn’t sanctify him.

He doesn’t need to be sanctified or villified, I think. He was a tremendous entertainer with a dark side. Neither of those aspects should be all he is remembered by; if so, it’s a false picture.

I never heard him sanctified when he was alive. He’s just being recognized for his enormous impact on music.

MLK, Rosa Parks and James Brown, link, what one does not belong with the others? (Channeling Sesame Street) What a POS media world we live in.

As a person, he lacked a lot. One of his mug shots is far less than flattering. As a performer, he was on a level with the likes of Elvis, Frank Sinatra, and others who could put on a powerful show.

One of the Christmas CD’s we’ve been playing at work has a song of his on there, and we were all talking about him yesterday while we listened, not knowing he was ill. So strange to hear the news today, since talking in depth about entertainers is not something we normally do at work. What I mean is, it seemed odd, while we were discussing him, to be discussing him at all. And then hearing the news just made it seem odder still.

I was so saddened to hear this. A real loss to the music world.

Phew. I had seriously considered putting him on my CDP2007 list, then didn’t. I have already missed out on Peter Boyle. Do I know how to pick 'em?

The man was a Genius, with that capital G.

His dying doesn’t sanctify him. What sanctifies him is the fact that he was a Music God.

I guess you have to take the bad with the good. He did a lot of good things, he did some really bad things. There was the whole PCP car chase incident and the beating his wife, but there was also the 1970 race riot in Augusta when he came back to town pleading for peace and giving toys to less fortunate kids at Christmas.

Agreed. I don’t think there is any one of us who is 100 percent good, or 100 percent bad.

Plus, he’s muthafuckin’ Soul Brother No. 1.
