So I just started getting into this James Brown thing. This is because I was finally exposed to him besides the “Living in America” scene from Rocky IV. This exposure came from the “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” soundtrack, which includes the songs “The Boss” and “Payback”.
So I want to know which albums would get me a good selection of James Brown. Unfortunately I don’t have enough money to buy a bunch of CDs. I just want to buy one to give me something to listen to before I can buy another one. So which James Brown record would you recommend?
In situations like this, a good “greatest hits” compilation might be just the thing. Make sure it has “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag”, “I Got You (I Feel Good)”,and “It’s A Man’s World” and also, rent and watch “The Blues Brothers”.
Oh baby! Where to start? I love JB with a passion. I would recomend The cd “Payback” witch has several good songs such as “The Payback” and “Stone to the Bone.” I would also have to recomend “Say it live and Loud-Live in Dallas 8/26/68” The band is so funkin’ bad on this record it kills me. Also, anything with Maceo Parker, Bootsy Collins, Jabo Starks, and Fred Wesely is worth listening to. Hope this helps. Hey, if you’re real strapped for cash, maybe you could send me some blank tapes and I could dub a couple of cd’s for you. I think I have over 20 JB cd’s. Email me if you are interested. Peace
The Godfather of Soul, Soul Brother Number 1, The Hardest Working Man in Showbizness…the man is a god. Makes me breakout in a cold sweat, ha. Oh yeah, get on the goodfoot.
There is a 2 CD set called “40th Anniversary Collection”. And, oddly enough, it’s got 40 songs on it. Nearly all of the ones you’d want. That thing is a big hit at parties, I have nearly worn mine out.
