Does anyone like James Brown?

My friends think me a fool for liking James Brown. There is just something about the funky beats and screaming that really gets me going. I live in the whitest of white states and I haven’t been able to find anyone else who enjoys JB as much as I do. So, do any on you Straight Dopers like the Minister of the New New Super Heavy Funk, James Brown?

A polling question of this nature properly belongs in our forum In My Humble Opinion. I’ll move it over there for you.

Sorry, thank you

Jabe

I’d think you’d be pretty hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t like at least ONE James Brown song. Tell your friends to show some respect to the Godfather of Soul, dammit!

Well if you only take his music into account I think the better question would be why does anybody not like James Brown ?

True, I was assuming from the OP he was talking about the music, not his violence and prison time, lol.

My wife went nuts when she heard this song in the Mel Gibson film “Payback” and I had to go out and find the CD for her. She’s a big James Brown fan now. Go figure.

Thanks fellas, I knew I wasnt alone. Most people I know are so rap oriented that they would rather die than listen to any music that is more than 4 years old. I think James Brown is one of the greatest performers of all time. His music opened my eyes to all kinds of good funk, like Maceo Parker, Bootsy, P-Funk and others. Well, have any of you ever seen a J.B concert? That would be one of the biggest thrills of my life. Thanks all,

Jabe

I agree with voguevixen: the real question is, does anyone NOT like James Brown?

Some great funk. James Brown is great, can’t get enough (well, maybe I could, but it would take a lot). I’ve never seen James Brown live, but I did see some of his Woodstock '99 performance on Much Music. He still puts on a pretty good show, considering how long he’s been doing it.

Soul Brother number 1 has always occupied a place on my multi cd.

Smooth, funky and a real showman. James still got it going on. Get one of his gold collection and listen to some of the lesser known songs or even better, grab a live set. The man can pull the crowd into the music.

Plus, no one can do that shimmy. NO ONE

We may not get along, but you covered all of my points jes’ fahn. He be the Godfather! The only one who gives it up like him is Jagger. Talk about earning your money! I still hope to see you at Sue’s. [hijack](BTW, Oldscratch is covered,)[/hijack]

You are not alone.

Let’s hear it for the Hardest Working Man In Showbiz!

James Brown’s music just cheers me up, like New Orleans jazz. It’s great stuff!

How can you NOT like James Brown’s music ???

OTOH, not to rain on anyone’s picnic, but I heard him live 3 or 4 years ago, and that was - not bad, but not that great, either. OK, it was an poutdoor festival and perhaps that’s not his sort of venue. What the heck, everybody’s entitled to a bad day, and his music remains fantastic.

S. Norman

Make that an “outdoor” festival. Darn.

Sorry, that should have read: I agree with voguevixen and yojimbo: the real question is, does anyone NOT like James Brown?

I blame that mistake on cheap wine.

Jabe, dear, you may want to find some new friends. (I like P-Funk too, btw)

Wait a minute. They like rap but not James Brown?

Why don’t they ask any (good) rap artist how they feel about James Brown? They’ll probably (rightly) genuflect.

I have the same feelings about rap. I feel that all rap artist owe James Brown their lives. How many rap songs use the drum beat from “Funky Drummer?” Acording to the website Funky-Stuff.com, more than I care to count.
