James Halperin's books

I’m starting this thread to see if anybody’s read his books, and to recommend them to anyone who hasn’t. As far as I know, he’s only written two, but they’re both pretty good.

The first is The Truth Machine, which is about the invention of a portable, accurate lie detector, and the social consequences of that. The second is The First Immortal*, about a dying man who’s cryonically frozen and revived 83 years later, and his attempts to deal with his new life and reconnect with his family.

I’ve read them both. I enjoyed them, but I wouldn’t really say they’re “good books”. I’d say they’re interesting and fairly well thought out thought experiments in the guise of novels.

Spoiler for The Truth Machine:

The whole business in TTM where the one guy is a super genius and he and only he could figure out how to defeat lie detectors, which would basically cause all of society to crumble, so they neuter his brain; makes no sense at all. If he could do it, someone else will figure it out some day, so get him to do it and figure out how so they can patch the security whole, for gods’ sake.
