Jan 6 Hearings Follow-Along & Commentary Thread (Starts Jun 9, 2022)

Limited, though, to those who provided direct aid to the Insurrectionists. They are not investigating those who voted against the certification, even though they, too, knew their arguments… the same as Trump’s… were bullshit, their votes damaging to the very system they swore to protect.

So… Loudermilk, yes. Hawley? This guy?

Unless he gave a tour, he’s getting off scot-free.

The worst thing about “we all know…” not being legally relevant is that it’s really frustrating when we all really do know.

I think the Jan 6 hearings are going to matter and that AG Garland is getting his ducks in a row to be the first one to take down a former president.

That said, the only conclusion I can take from the Mueller Report is that Robert Mueller did his job and then completely allowed Bill Barr to take over the narrative. Day one, Mueller should have called a press conference and said “bullshit.”

Whilst I’ll give Pence that for one day he stood up. What did he do for the other 4 years. And every one off these kiss and tell white washing books? No one had the huevos to stand up at the time and call bullshit. Pence should have gone 25th amendment the minute the electoral votes were counted. I am sick and tired of all these so-called adults in the room waiting years until trumpy is out of office and they have a book deal to grow a spine.

So, while I hope for the best out of the Jan 6 committee and AG Garland, I am going to prepare for the worst.

I disagree with their vote, but that’s a political disagreement, not a legal one. If it is illegal for them to vote “the wrong way”, then what’s the point of a vote in the first place?

I mean, did he actually break any laws?

I really do think Pence should get the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his actions on January 6th. Not because I like Pence, or because I think he’s a hero for not committing treason.

It’s because I think it would be an epic move. Pence would hate it, Pence hates it every time he’s reminded that the man whose ass he licked for 4 years sent a lynch mob after him , even worse, won’t even give him a taste anymore.

But Pence would almost have to accept, then we’d get a great photo op of Biden giving Pence the award in front of a crowd of cheering Democrats.

And the Republicans would excoriate him, once again reminding the world that they’re treason weasels. I hope Biden does this in the name of “unity and bipartisanship”.

A quite reasonable approach. While I appreciate the committee’s efforts to set the record straight for the history books, I think that this country is too far gone to ever see justice like Trump in handcuffs. I think it’s far more likely that Trump is going to get away with whatever the hell he feels like getting away with. “Too far gone” as in, the Texas Republican party, as a whole, just officially resolved that Biden did not win fairly. Good luck with that America, which includes me.

Yeah - that is a risk. Trump was unquestionably irresponsible at best, and a total jerk by most sane peoples’ measure. But did he commit crimes? I think so, but his actions were so outrageous, they skirted the specific language of various laws, and his position was so elevated, that successful prosecution would be challenging. It is a crazy situation where even a conviction would don’t change the minds of his supporters. But the “perp walk” and presentation of evidence COULD motivate the rational folk.

And why not? After all, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, once a meaningful honor, is now totally debauched ever since Trump gave it to the late, unlamented Rush Limbaugh.

And Jim Jordan.

So Trump has apparently gotten away with any criminal prosecution in the state of New York for tax & insurance fraud (although he still faces civil charges), and his federal prosecution for sedition is … problematic. But he still faces criminal charges in Georgia for election fraud, for trying to “find” votes.

So the jury’s still out, as it were.

What Judge Luttig said for the record was an incredible moment defining the threats to American democracy he was seeing. I appreciate his care in articulating his thoughts.

Still, “Since Judge Luttig has been speaking we’ve learned of three more secret Herschel Walker children” was pretty funny (and damn near accurate).

That is Evil, Vicious and Nasty.

I heard a little bit of Luttig while I was in the car out grabbing lunch. When I got home from work that night the first question I asked my wife was “Did he ever finish his sentence?” :grinning:

What was he being so careful about; was he worried that he’d overstate the threat posed by Trump and get Trump in undue trouble, that he’s understate the threat and leave the country in trouble, or that he’d say something incriminating and get himself in trouble?

Here, Judge Luttig explains in his own words why his delivery was slow and deliberate:

Yes, he was speaking to history and engraving his words in stone, I’d heard that before. But it doesn’t answer my question. If he hadn’t chosen his words so slowly and deliberately, was he worried that his testimony would be too harsh, or not harsh enough?

Who can know that?

Maybe nobody, but before I join in the chorus of people praising Luttig for taking this so seriously, I want to know if he was deliberately soft-pedalling the truth to keep his friends out of trouble.

I’m not praising Luttig. I’m glad he did the right thing, but I don’t know the fellow well enough to offer an opinion on his motives.

Still, I did hear his testimony first hand, and my impression was that he is gravely concerned for the state of our democracy. Too little too late, for sure – but OTOH, better late than never.

Linky?

Last I heard was this:
