Jan 6 Hearings Follow-Along & Commentary Thread (Starts Jun 9, 2022)

It’s Melania.

(Just putting my chip on the roulette table.)

Good catch! That article makes a good case that Cipollone is the most likely candidate. They wanted Cipollone to testify with Rosen, Engel and Donaghue, the last witnesses we heard from.

I was disappointed (but not surprised) to read this from the article:

Cipollone has also made clear that his testimony would be restricted to the effort undertaken by former top Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark to use the powers of the DOJ to further Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election, sources familiar with the deliberations said.

So Cipollone squeezes Clark, and the hope is that Clark flips on Trump.

Makes sense, because Clark sure looks like the weakest link in the plot with the greatest criminal exposure (besides Trump, of course). He looked like someone just stole his lunch money when I saw clips of him whining to Tucker Carlson a couple nights after the warrant execution.

Add Nevada GOP chair Michael McDonald to the list of folks involved in the fake elector scheme who had his cell phone seized.

And the DOJ just executed a search warrant on Clark this past Thursday. The noose tightens…

I hate to be overly optimistic, but it seems that quite a bit of the previous “bombshells” the committee has revealed have resulted from or been gleaned from the text messages and brief testimony that Meadows provided before he stopped cooperating. When held in contempt he was not charged by DOJ which I readily admit could be due to complications with regard to his claims of privilege. But perhaps it might also be due to the fact that he had been pushed to cooperate before. He seemed like a shoo-in for indictment yet . . . . so far, nothing. Maybe they did not indict him because he was the most likely to flip himself? Bannon and Navarro were never going to flip- they are true believers who are at least committed participants who will fight to a bloody demise before surrender. If Trump dies tomorrow, they will still be fighting the same fight next month and next year. But Meadows may be watching Michael Cohen pontificating on cable news and late night talk shows after a short incarceration and some home arrest. Cohen never fails to promote his best selling book and Meadows may be thinking- that’s not such a bad life for a convicted bag man.

I don’t know how these things work beyond watching TV procedural programs, but the way they always work there, is that the squeeze has to be worth the juice. It seems Meadows (being at the center of it all) has plenty of juice to release if he is squeezed just right. Even if he gets full immunity (or dismissed charges after a probation sentence is completed), it might be worth it if he can very strongly implicate all the other actors? Perhaps behind the scenes the DOJ and Meadow’s lawyers have been playing a game of: “What do you give me if I spill my guts?” Against: “No, no, no – what can you prove to get any reduced sentence at all?”

I am in the camp that believes the committee is smart enough to know the documentary – and especially all the unused footage may contain more than one smoking gun. Even if they found something quite suggestive or even incriminating- tomorrow is just too soon to schedule an add’l hearing. That will still be there on tape in early July, and further investigation may reveal even more ‘there’, there. It does not seem likely there will be anything time sensitive in tomorrow’s hearing, after all the committee is not a law enforcement agency and they cannot serve warrants or arrest anyone, but perhaps they have some information that will give good patriotic souls something to mull over while they grille their burgers & hot dogs and drink beer over the extremely patriotic holiday weekend.

Of course, this:

can readily explain the sense of urgency and is probably the correct answer.

Maybe someone (someone who has the goods on all the rest of the conspirators) flipped AND the film footage has some tidbits that, when taken together, make it worth scheduling one more June hearing? I sure hope tomorrow’s hearing lives up to the hype.

Upon reflection-- Whatever the new information is, it will not be fully satisfying unless it also includes evidence that will convict all of the congressmen and congresswomen included in the conspiracy.

Ugg!
Every time someone posts, I need to add, delete, or change something!

I think this would be very unsatisfying, very unsatisfying in the extreme!
Clark is a dope and crackpot to say the least. It makes sense that the true conspirators would love to leave him holding the bag when the cops roll onto the scene, but that would be kind of like catching the get away driver after the criminals robbed you and ran in the opposite direction leaving him to take the rap. As you point out, he is such a whiny little nothing burger that I just hope his next fifteen minutes of fame come when he gets caught up with the higher ups when they bare arrested and perp walked to jail.

He is a low-level flunky who could be easily replaced by Gilligan, or Cpl. Agarn. Unless he can absolutely bury Trump for Twenty to Life, I don’t need to hear from him ever- and neither does the Committee. Unless he brings down the entire conspiracy, he should go back to his office and we will call him if there is an oil spill. He is a scurvy little spider who tried to use an unprecedented circumstance to launch himself to significance-- below contemptible.

In fact I doubt he knows more than we already know- that he was an incompetent boob who was willing to do anything, say anything, be anyone to have a few minutes of sunshine before being disgraced in front of the entire nation.

Wow! {granted, the link below is from June 9th}

Cassidy Hutchinson: Former Meadows aide may testify publicly after dropping Trump-linked attorney - CNNPolitics

“Hutchinson told the January 6 committee that Trump had suggested to Meadows he approved of the “hang Mike Pence” chants from rioters who stormed the US Capitol, CNN has reported.”

Yes. She will testify now because “I am too important to be captured.”

OK, this made me laugh.

As did this:

Eric Trump thought inciting violence was ‘fair game’ because he believed false claims that the 2020 election was ‘stolen,’ according to filmmaker subpoenaed by January 6 committee

Close to meadows is the answer. Hutchinson is quite the witness. She has testified before the committee for hours on many occasions.

No clue who the witness will be but for all the secretiveness and last minute scheduling I am expecting audio or video recordings will play an important part.

And likely very recognizable voices saying very incriminating things.

I think Donald is going to testify tomorrow and say it was all Omarosa’s fault.

This is my prediction…

Donald Trump found out he has 48 hours to live. So he decided he wanted to confess everything before he goes. Not because he fears his place in the afterlife (“God will be so happy to see me!”) or his wispy dust bunny of a conscience took over. He just wants one last chance to be the center of everyone’s attention.

But then why all the secrecy? Donny insisted. If anything leaks and he loses his thunder then he won’t play, and he’ll go to his grave with it all.

He’ll throw absolutely everyone under the bus. From his family to his staff, lawyers, all of his toadies. He thinks he’ll be able to spin it like he’s a hero but it will horrify everyone.

That’s my prediction.

I’m almost hoping it would be Pence. With a strong callout to old-time republicans to take the lead in his party. But it would have to begin with a prayer.

From the article:

Yes, this makes the most sense (at this time), far more than my own convoluted guess. She has little to lose as she wasn’t in charge of much, she was a first hand witness, and they know exactly where she can go because of her previous testimony/depositions. Take away the legal “guardian” who was perhaps looking out for Trump as much as for his client, and she may blow the roof off the joint.

Of course, the minute she is sworn in, Meadows will bust in with an offer to testify – or he will flee the country!

You know, I have been speculating about Putin’s health - - - and I kind of wonder if upon his deathbed, he does not reveal that Trump was responding to pressure of some sort (loans, piss tape, promise of development deals, what have you), it would allow Putin to die the ‘winner’ of that particular pissing match. Wouldn’t effect tomorrow’s hearing, but it would give a nice international twist to Trump’s “America First” rhetoric. If it does ever happen, the interesting part will be to see how his supporters spin it as a good and logical and patriotic thing.

This reminds me of a post I saw on a RWNJ message board maybe a week prior to January 6, 2021. It basically said that Trump was going to address Congress on the morning of January 6, with new evidence that would prove that he won the election.

A few of the non-RWNJs (and there are a few over there) asked, if he had “new evidence,” then why wasn’t he letting us know what it was now? Why wait for January 6?

“Because he’s a showman,” came the reply. “He likes the big reveal, the big surprise. Besides, it will be so earth-shaking that Congress will be unable to do anything but deny certification of electoral results after his address. So, he stays President.”

The discussion came to an end when an American constitutional lawyer pointed out that the US President must be invited to address Congress, and since Trump wasn’t invited, he would not be addressing Congress that morning. And of course, he did not.

Regardless of where this nutjob idea came from, the fact remains that Trumpists love the idea that Trump has some surprise news that will change everything, and that he will announce at a later date. That’s why he keeps everything secret: because a leak would cause him to lose his thunder.

You say “showman”, I say “doddering old toddler throwing a fit and demanding attention”.

You say “potatohead”, I say “potahtohead”.
