Jardiance is a scary drug

Which is precisely what advertising is designed to do, isn’t it? It never should been allowed for Rx drugs. I spent the last 25 years of my career in a public health related field. No one there thought that was a good idea.

:+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:

It should be illegal to advertise prescription drugs. OTC drugs are fine but a doctor should be prescribing drugs, they should not be something that a patient asks for because an actor looks happy on TV while a song about the drug plays in the background.

And there are so fucking many of them. I am pretty much guaranteed to see at least one during any commercial break. There is literally one playing on my TV as I type this sentence.

Unfortunately the drug companies make shit tons of money and spend a lot on lobbyists and campaign contributions so we’re probably going to be living with these abominations for years to come.

Just to chime in for everyone’s information, you can get Keto Sticks at the drugstore. They will tell you if you are actually in Ketoacidosis

Yes, these are what told me that I was in DKA, they probably saved my life. I also used them (along with blood sugar testing) everyday when on a low carb diet to make sure I was in ketosis (not ketoacidtosis).

I currently take it and thus far the only side effects have been yeast infections from time to time. I have avoided the worst side effect- breaking into song and dance.

I thought the gentleman in the hardhat was wearing a yellow onesie. It’s taken me a while to stop laughing!

If so, I think someone else also has a big story to tell.

Well, I guess the Trulicity shortage means I’m starting Jardiance tomorrow.

You know I don’t think Jardiance is any scarier than any of the other medications they flog on commercials. They all have numerous side effects often the last one mentioned is: “Even death.” I’ve heard the perineum infection thing for more than Jardiance.
On a limb here, but I’m thinking most of the side affects are unusual to rare, as they wouldn’t be cleared by the FDA etc. if these side affects were at all common. Maybe they have to mention all possible side affects to air the commercial much like the pharmacy has to give you a brochure outlining all the possible outcomes?

I love the, “Don’t take X if allergic to X.”

No shit…

ProTip: Don’t Google Image search “Jardiance perineum infection”.

Somehow I don’t think it’s safe even if you leave out “Jardiance”.

i was once told that sometimes the whole side effects thing is overblown … apparently, the FDA requires a certain amount of people in its testing, and if it happens to a certain amount of people in that test it’s a side effect so if it’s a side effect it might have happened to 5 or 10 people in a few hundred

But because there’s that 5% chance it might happen to someone they have to tell you

I’m actually starting to ween myself off of Jardiance by finishing out my remaing script of 25mg and cutting them in half for the next two months. Nothing to do about the side affects, but my goal is to get off of all of my diabetic meds by weight loss and exercise before I retire. That and my first srcipt for this year is going to cost me $1861 for a 90 day supply before my deductable kicks in, screw that.

I meet with my doctor in two weeks and we will discuss my plan in detail, but my HgA1C is now at 5.7, so I think its time to up my game.

Wouldn’t you want to know about those things?

Of course you would, but 5% seems kind of high for serious side affects (such as may cause death)!

So I did a quick search and it doesn’t appear to be an FDA requirement to list side effects that meet a specific threshold. Its more of a CYA move on the drug companies part by its lawyers. Pretty much all drugs (and many foods) have side effects of some sort. Which is another reason to try and get off meds whenever possible IMHO.

It is a requirement. The threshold to list a side effect is that it exists at all.

Yes, for advertisements about prescription drugs, it’s a requirement by the FDA. The FDA doesn’t require that advertisers disclose how well a drug works, or how much it costs, which is why you don’t see those things in commercials. It also doesn’t require that advertisers disclose side effects for OTC drugs, and that’s why you don’t hear all of the side effects on commercials of a drug like Pepto Bismol or Tylenol.

(The FDA apparently doesn’t have any rules about OTC drug or dietary supplement advertising at all, that’s regulated by the FTC who is more concerned about fraud and other problems that apply to any kind of advertisement.)

So it’s clearly not a CYA thing as the drug companies are doing exactly what the FDA requires and no more.

Yeah, I usually smirk at that one.

A… yeah, I’m good.
