ISTM that there were two acceptable things to do:

I wonder if he’s on edge about something else and took it out on this person. Rather than being upset about this specific and particular insult, he was already about ready to blow his top and took out his anger on this person. I would have to assume that every pro athlete hears stuff like this all the time, both from the crowd and from the opposing players. Trash talk is a normal part of pro sports. I doubt this is the first time someone in the crowd said something insulting. Athletes shouldn’t act like this for the simple reason that the opposing team and fans will ramp up the insults to throw a player off their game. Players need to just let it roll off their back and do nothing.
Sadly, he’s probably going to have to make some sort of public apology to the shithead.
