Jaycee Duggard pictures and interview

They’re dead, they don’t have privacy to invade.

But the movie makers made money off murder , privacy is another issue.

The daughters are perhaps the greatest victims of this whole awful case. Can you imagine how Jaycee’s family has to see them? No matter how sweet they are or aren’t and no matter that they can no more help what brought them here than anybody else, there’s always going to be the “you wouldn’t exist if your underaged mother hadn’t been raped by a man who should have been tortured to death on a public street” elephant in the room.
If I were their one of their maternal relatives accepting them would be the hardest part of the ordeal even though I realize they are totally innocent.

I think what I would do is have Garrido’s family investigated. Hopefully he has at least one decent living relative- a sibling or even a cousin. I’d do all I could to have him or her come help with the transition, and to remind the kids (who probably love their father- he’s all they’ve ever known after all and the effed up tents out back was the only life they knew) that they don’t have to be like him.

The main thing I would like to know about Jaycee- and this is not snark or accusation or anything like but curiosity- is how he managed to keep her captive for 18 years. Prison camps with razor wire and armed guards have successful escapes, and in 18 years there has to have been some time when she’d have been able to get away. Was it Stockhold Syndrome or the kids that kept her there? Did she have any idea where she was?

Smart gave one of the all time classiest bitchslaps in that interview. Keep in mind this was filmed after Smart and her representatives had discussed what she would and would not talk about IN DETAIL and that Nancy had specifically agreed not to mention any details of her ordeal as Smart was there to discuss the bill that was under discussion regarding missing children.

For the above: What’s incredible is how when Smart told her- in amazingly polite but not at all uncertain terms- that “I’M NOT GOING TO TALK ABOUT MY ABDUCTION” Grace basically says “Oh I’m sorry, I thought you were concerned with helping others.”

I’m convinced that Nancy Grace is a very rare creature: a stupid sociopath. Most, I understand, are intelligent. She tag teams with Lou Dobbs to destroy CNN’s validity as a news network. (Larry King is total fluff but at least unlike Dobbs and Grace [and until recently Beck] he doesn’t pretend to be anything but a celebrity interviewer, and considering that Larry King in fact died in 1987 and what you see is just a reanimated corpse anything he does is impressive.)

I think I disagree. This is the sort of thing one thinks in the abstract, but I expect that once they’re actually there, they just become your grandchildren.

She left the house with Garrido - that’s how she was discovered. UC Berkeley police thought there was something odd about the family. She was not held there all time time like being in a prison.

Has anybody seen the photos taken inside Garrido’s house? Not the tents where the girls were kept but the house itself where he lived with his wife. It’s disgusting- filled with garbage and nasty and the yards more like a landfill than a residence.

What’s amazing is that this websiteestimates it’s value as around $700,000. (It belongs to his mother who’s an invalid.)

I gotta go with Dio on this one.

That’s just the Northern California housing market, for you. I don’t know if it’s because of inscrutable and unscrupulous socioeconomic practices, or just location-location-location, or what.

And most of it, we never hear about. Often that’s because it happens to people who aren’t cute or who are not deemed to be appropriately interesting to the public.

I don’t think it’s fucked up or immoral to be interested in this story. That’s basic human sympathy and curiosity. The coverage is something different, and I find it much more cynical and manipulative.

Yeah, that’s a terrible thing to say. The great thing is that Grace appears to believe that’s a legitimate apology rather than a passive-agressive self justification, because she then says something sympathetic and changes the subject.

Even sociopaths have to have a Bell Curve.

The one reason I feel compelled to read about this case, even though it makes me feel sick and I really don’t want to know: is there any shred of information she can share that might help a future victim? I realize we can’t hover over our kids and protect them from living life. But is there anything I can teach my children to arm them against someone trying to mindfuck them like she undoubtedly was? When did she first have a physical opportunity to escape, and (assuming it was earlier than this year), what did he do to her that prevented her from taking it?

Maybe there is nothing we could do to combat that kind of thing - maybe this sicko just exploited an inherent feature of human psychology. But I would at least like experts to hear what happened and distill for us anything we can reasonably do to protect our own kids - to give them the best chance of avoiding, and if it comes to it, breaking free of a captivity like this.

But I’ll admit, I would rather not hear the details myself, and people who would strike me a ghoulish.

a cynic is just that, and you do live in the yard, you live in the shell of your own mind and you want all the rest of us to live there, too. MOSTLY Jaycee. Victims are ALWAYS alone, and in private. The healed are free and shared. We’re human, we share common problems and concerns. You might be less obvious if you didnt actually know you are one.
