On the bottom of Iomega Jaz (and IIRC Zip) disks there is a circular window with 12 silver hexagons showing. The hexagons almost appear to be a hologram. I have searched and searched the web and can find nothing about the purpose of this window. Does anyone here have an idea what this is for?
It’s probably to prove it’s a real Jaz disk by Iomega, not a cheap knock-off. Like the hologram on windows licenses, or on your credit card (if you have one).
Well, I don’t have a JAZ drive, but I do have a ZIP. I have both Iomega and Fuji disks. Both have that little hologram solar panel thing you speak of, in the same location. Maybe it’s the write-protect feature?
I had thought about the fact that it might be a way to prove that it is an authentic Iomega disk, but as vandal said, fuji has them too.
If it is the write protect feature, how would it work?
The write protect feature is done electronically.
After speaking with Timothy with Iomega’s customer service department (yep - I called them to ask them) I was told that these “thingies” are actually crystals which help the drives differentiate the types of disks they are (1GB, 2GB, etc.)
