I was going to write that JD Vance was on the street by my place yesterday for a wedding. I was working but saw him on TV. The channel’s camera person had he and his wife in the shot and the reporter said “I don’t recognize him in the shot.” I’m going to quit watching that channel.

Whoever the Vatican picks as the next Pope will be a pretty good barometer of MAGA’s global power. Smart money would be a pick to appease the conservative American Catholics and avoid a schism.
The pattern in the modern church has been to alternate a “pastoral”-focused pope with an “academic”/doctrinal-focused one. Which casual observers looking from this side of the wall tend to cast as liberal v. conservative.
Francis’ successor just by basic probability was already likely to have a more disciplinarian, strict-observance approach and be less of a people-pleaser no matter what else was going on.
And when you do bear in mind general politics, let’s not forget RW populism has been on the rise everywhere and the church’s biggest growth is in the global South where cultures are traditionalist. Americans should not flatter themselves that they are the drivers.
