Launching this thread early to allow time to get our ducks in a row.
Thanks for starting the thread @ThelmaLou!
As I mentioned in the monthly mini-rants thread in The Pit, my understanding is that there will be no fact-checking by the moderators; the candidates are expected to provide their own fact-checking. So we’ll see how that goes.
Also, I guess I need to hit the liquor store. I’m out of whiskey!
Reading that made me laugh out loud. We have a tradition of calling any liquor other than beer, whiskey. Being “out of whiskey” would be outrageous!
Well actually, I’m out of beer too! But for the debate I plan on drinking Manhattans.
I have a planning board meeting that evening and don’t know what time I’ll get home. I might catch part of the debate but it’s unlikely I’ll be able to watch all of it and I might well miss most of it.
Might drop in on this thread when I do get home and have dealt with anything else immediate.
In advance, a question:
There have been memorable VP debate moments but anyone know of any that meaningfully impacted the election?
Even horrible performances seemed to do nothing. And of the insignificant impacts made, any that were other than a viral moment, like the fly on Pence, or the Quayle put down?
I’ll post my fantasy here. Walz comments that Vance admitted making up stories and says “What kind of person does something like that?” He then goes on to comment on how his students were much better liars, throws in a few quotes about how Vance compared Trump to Hitler (bonus points if he does it in response to Vance accusing Harris of flip flopping) and then tells us how to gap a spark plug. He can also reuse his line about what a monster he is for wanting children fed so they can learn.
I’m working on my bingo card. So far the center square is any comments about pets in any context. We also have Walz holding his hand over his heart, Vance insinuating in any way that a woman’s primary role is to raise children, Walz using a football metaphor, Vance mentioning his time in the military, Walz using the term “joyful warrior” and Vance complaining about his children.
In retrospect, they should have captured that fly on Pence’s head and put it in the Smithsonian. I’m a little apprehensive about tonight- Walz is entering a cage match against a madman. Sure, on logic he wins but the opposition is not afraid to do nothing but sling mud and if enough of it sticks it could have a negative impact.
Trump has already seeded the idea that the VP debate will be unfair. Business as usual.
Always have a backup excuse ready for why you did so poorly. Never take responsibility!
I want someone to ask Vance exactly what he would have done in Pence’s shoes on January 6, 2021.
Great question, @Elmer_J.Fudd ! Let’s hope it happens.
Thanks for starting the thread, @ThelmaLou . I was hoping that there would be a follow-along thread, and I’m glad to see that you made one. I’m sure that a number of us will be watching and posting when the debate occurs.
He could say he’d do the opposite of Pence and lose no votes.
Have O’Donnell and Brennan oversaw other debates you’ve seen? I could see other CBS staff who are perhaps more experienced at getting candidates to answer their questions or fact check as they go along.
My tolearance for Vance is wven lower than Trump (sort of dull to it) so will get it mostly from MSNBC analysts following the debate and any good clips. Rachel Maddow gave some background on Vance:
Any suggestions for “must take a sip” phrases?
“Mind your own damn business”
“That’s why we named our daughter Hope”
“Joyful Warrior”
“Open Borders”
Yep. It’s like blaming the refs for losing the game before it’s even played.
Me, too. Nobody does it like Rachel.
And the company that makes the footballs and the uniforms. And the guys who maintain the field. And the people who sell the popcorn, peanuts, and beer. It’s everybody’s fault! But never mine.
MSNBC is already doing the pre-analysis analysis.
